That would be the Queen's English then, would it?
Check the Oxford English Dictionary and Fowler's Modern English Usage (the section called -ise, -ize) before you criticize :D

Important lesson: Microsoft Word is not an authoritative source on spelling and grammar

Or alternatively, look here. ;)

dsmith 29 October 2002 04:38 PM

Ahh - Google - the IT consultants friend :D

Ever been on the phone when someone asks you a trivia question and you have to type quietly whilst stalling untill you can get google to give you the answer :D

Nimbus 29 October 2002 04:39 PM

I always thought the the "ise" is the English way, and "ize" was the American way...

MarkO 29 October 2002 04:42 PM

Ahh - Google - the IT consultants friend
Google? That wasn't a link to google - it was a link to the english usage FAQ, a site I use frequently when pedantically arguing the toss with people about apostrophe usage, etc, etc. :D

dsmith 29 October 2002 04:46 PM

Soz Mark,

I had mistakenly assumed you'd found the link via a quick google. Didn't realise it was in your favourites under the "Pedant's Corner" section :D

Deano

ChrisB 29 October 2002 04:49 PM

LMAO at you lot! :D

{Was there anything wrong with that sentence?}

MarkO 29 October 2002 04:51 PM

Actually, that should be Pedants' Corner. :p

Nimbus 29 October 2002 05:01 PM

As much as it pains me to say it, criticize is in my Little Oxford Dictionary. ;)

MarkO 29 October 2002 05:02 PM

Must be wrong, then, judging by previous performance. :p

Nimbus 29 October 2002 05:04 PM

So Carl is wrong as well then?

dsmith 29 October 2002 05:06 PM

As much as I hate to prolong a thread for the sake of it ;) - Why Pedants' Corner not Pedant's Corner

I was under the impression Pedant's would be correct to describe a corner belonging to a single Pedant (i.e. you) rather than a corner belonging to mulitiple Pedants.

Of course if you share your IE favourites with other like minded pedants than I stand humbly corrected. ;)

Deano,

You didn't edit your post for a spelling or grammatical error did you ;)?

EDIT. (like I just did)

[Edited by Nimbus - 10/29/2002 5:14:51 PM]

dsmith 29 October 2002 05:16 PM

Me ? Surely not ;)

But I was forgetting it was gone 5 so Mark will have been out of the office faster than a rat up a drain pipe ;) We'll have to wait until tomorrow morning for a repsonse :)

Deano

Nimbus 29 October 2002 05:21 PM

LOL. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I will have no Net access tomorrow, so will have to catch up on this one later in the week.

carl 29 October 2002 07:21 PM

Surely it must be Pedants' Corner as both Mark and I would be in it :D

MarkO 30 October 2002 07:24 AM

Exactly. Pedants' Corner is where the pedants hang out. :D

bros2 30 October 2002 07:31 AM

Surely Pedant's Corner more accurately be described as where they turn? Pedant's Rest would be the place where they hang out, I should have thought.

Bros

carl 30 October 2002 07:42 AM

Not really. There's not a lot of turning going on at Speakers' Corner, is there?

I'll e-mail SDB and see if we can get a new forum set up :D

MarkO 30 October 2002 08:43 AM

Another few posts and I'll best somebody posts about the pedants' CORNER in this thread. ;)

chiark 30 October 2002 09:09 AM

The pedants are revolting!

Mice_Elf 30 October 2002 10:33 AM

No, they just smell awful. :D

MarkO 30 October 2002 10:34 AM

My dog's got no nose.....
How does he smell?

etc. ;-)

Mice_Elf 30 October 2002 10:35 AM

So that would be ;) in long-hand, Mark? ;)

MarkO 30 October 2002 10:36 AM

Bah. Too used to email. :( ;)

alcazar 30 October 2002 12:25 PM

Bah???
You've been reading "The Beano" again haven't you? :D:
Alcazar

MarkO 30 October 2002 12:29 PM

Of course. I find it more intellectually stimulating than the Sun or the Mirror. ;)

Gadzooks!

TelBoy 30 October 2002 12:41 PM

Mark, no it isn't.

beemerboy 30 October 2002 12:43 PM

PS. Is the word "dictionary" in the dictionary?
While your looking, is there another word for thesaurus????

BB

TelBoy 30 October 2002 12:46 PM

Beemerboy, that would be a "whilst" then, wouldn't it..?
