Belgium is a place to buy unlocked phones. Exchange rate sucks, but if you really can't wait.

Ultra-micro laptops and Phones: Apple iPhone vs HTC Diamond 2 vs HTC Magic

Any review where the reviewers main consideration is 'Hackability' should be swiftly dismissed.

Isn't Jailbreaking a hack?
But point taken if that is the "main" consideration.

None the less, its an opinion of a group of people, and has to be respected. Everyone wants different things from phones.

I just thought jailbreaking allowed use of other non approved apps as well as other networks.

O2: We'll disconnect 'free' iPhone tetherers | News | TechRadar UK

SwissTony 19 June 2009 09:22 AM

We're still waiting to find out exactly how O2 will know the difference between data on the mobile and on a laptop, although simple usage graphs would show a sharp increase in data consumption.
Simple really. Dont go surfing for porn or youtube clips whilst tethered.
I have used it yesterday for some emails and some casual browsing and works fine :thumb:

Snazy 19 June 2009 09:34 AM

Same sort of thing on BB's
Apparently they were doing it by which browser was being user etc.
They tied their free data into a couple of browsers, and for a while even those using the BB but on another browser were getting charged data.

Its a bit revenue opportunity, and not one I can see any company just giving away unless its planned.

Good choice Ian, as I understand it OSX support is a bit weak though, feel free to correct me.

Erm, well, I plug it into my Mac or PC and it appears as a USB drive where I can drag and drop files. That is the extent of it's interaction really except it also tethers over USB. It you want to sync contacts, address book etc. it does that automatically over WifI/3G using your Google Contacts. So if I change a contact on my phone, my Google Contacts get updated straight away and vice-versa. I think that is similar to MobileMe? but is free. Same with Google Mail as well.

I'm not a big music listener so I don't need syncing with iTunes. But saying that, I just dragged a load of random tracks out of my iTunes folder onto the HTC and they appeared all correctly labelled under the Music app and the HTC even goes off and downloads the album artwork for you which was unexpected and rather cool.

Other great feature (to me anyway :)) is the fact you can just download the SDK for Android and write your own apps which is dead easy and then just copy to the phone. SDK is available for Linux, Mac, Win so possibilities are endless for messing about with it.

Overall, I'm very happy with the HTC Magic. It was a very close call between that and the new iPhone, but the carriers available (i.e. o2) made the decision for me.

If the iPhone was available on Vodafone/Orange then the decision may have gone the other way.

Anyway, worth a look :)

Cheers

Ian

Ian
Sounds as though the HTC ticks all the boxes for you so well done on your choice :thumb:

Ian 19 June 2009 01:17 PM

Very impressive, no 3g/Edge coverage at my house and it still opened web pages really quickly over gprs. I installed safari just in case they can see what web browser is being used but don't know if they can tell between safari versions, i.e. windows or iphone safari versions.

Snazy 19 June 2009 05:20 PM

Different servers etc have different scripts running.
My server will break down which version of an OS is in use as well as which version of a browser, and give me stats based on that.

This sort of thing Browser Detection

Cheers so very easy for 02 to find out who is using it tethered then as i'm assuming all traffic has to go through an 02 proxy.

Easy yes, but if they will or not is another matter really.
Same as broadband data allowance, if you sneek a gig over every now and then its no biggy. Go 5 gig over monthly and they will start looking closer. Same with free texts.
Its all down to their FUP, and how closely they follow it.

Tbh its a bit of a wierd one. If you are at home, most people have broadband anyway. Just hook up WiFi UMA when there. And this is the wierd bit... Why do you need to use an iPhone to connect up to a laptop on the move, surely thats the whole point of the iPhone, and you can just use that instead.

I realise banking etc might require a more secure connection, but still

Probably same reason why I hook up my Touch HD to a laptop when working away.
Despite its very large screen, trying to put together reports and emailing them when staying away is not my idea of fun on any form of phone/PDA/BB, so the phone becomes a modem.

And there is the reason I was looking for :)
Was not a criticism, just a question lol.

Not being someone who needs to do these things, I dont think on that level :)
Have always had broadband when I have been away so not needed to.

Good point though :thumb:

No problem. :)

Its also saved my a$$ when the office broadband has failed, but I've rigged up the PC with the phone to send stuff.

Cant remember if it was 02 or Voda, but one of the phones i had, had exclusions about using your phone as a modem, free minutes would not apply...

Oh and just to bring the thread back on topic...
