Its just not worth having anything nice nowadays, I seem to remember a post a while back about a gang that broke into someone's house demanding keys for the Subaru. Frightening to think the lengths thieves will go to in order to get a car.

I can totally understand you not wanting the car back. I certainly wouldn't especially when family could be at risk.

Maybe look into storing the replacement car somewhere, like a lock up away from your house? I know its not ideal but may be a short term solution?

Yes got a garage, but the house was built in the 70's where a Vauxhall Viva was classed as a big car, now with all these new big cars, I don't think it would fit, or there wouldn't be much room.

Its not nice at all, had to have all the locks changed, a new door at the rear of my house as the locksmith couldn't find a replacement lock to fit in the door.

But I would rather not have the car if I have to park it away from my property, This Golf R was supposed to be the car where I use everyday, and not treat it like a toy like my old Subaru, My mate has offered to keep it in his double garage next to his mint mk2 FRS, but I wouldn't want to put that on him, if they come to take both the cars, Id feel really guilty if they nicked my car from a friends house doing me a favour!!!

Gutted for you Scoobyboy, just glad the family is ok which is the important thing :)

Explain to the insurance company that there is no way you would have the car back nor a like for like incase it happens again.
Glad they took the keys and left....could of been a lot worse :(
I've had the argument about keys being upstairs before......fk that with 2 kids and a missis in the house sleeping :mad:

This is terrible news, as everyone else has said, I'm glad you and the family are ok and weren't confronted by these scumbags.

What will happen next because given the lack of availability, a replacement car could take quite some time to arrive.

This is the problem, My missus does not want that car on the drive or any Golf R, that also rules out Audi S3, RS3, Focus RS, BMW M3 etc etc, So now I got to suffer with a sh1tter.

I waited 5-6 months,for that car, Ive told VW finance I would rather just have my deposit back, but they said we will see what the insurance company say first.:Suspiciou

Gutted for you. What about considering one or two of those retractable bollards positioned in the middle of your driveway entrance? That would stop any thief driving off with a car. You can buy decent ones for domestic use for not a massive amout of money.

They have already demonstrated a willingness to enter the house. Surely, they would wake the occupants and threaten violence in exchange for the key or access to the bollards?

I'd honestly consider moving. I'm not sure I'd want to stay in a house/area where this has happened. Statistically speaking, there is a higher probability of it happening again. In the case of burglary, they often wait a month or two until you have all your new stuff on the insurance and then they come back. I do not wish to cause alarm, but we have to realistic here....there is a chance your house is being monitored to see if a nice new replacement Golf R shows up.

The same could be said if he were to move house. Chances are it's to order, they've only got to follow you.

If I was in that situation I honestly wouldn't move house because the chances are it could happen where ever live. You shouldn't have to keep moving house because you're afraid of your car being stolen. You can't let them win. I would bump up security, get an alarm system, CCTV, driveway bollards and make your house more difficult to burglar than the other houses on your street. The chances are they'll try the next nice house down the road with a shiny car on the drive. Depending on your work situation and the free time you have, even consider a large breed of dog known for being aloof with strangers and territorial.

Bit of a update, The police have been round and said that they think the same guys stole another car near where I live a few hours after my car and have been caught, they are part of a gang and they are trying to get them to give up some info on the rest of the gang and the were about of my car!!!

as people have rightly said - only a lump of plastic an metal when all said and done and the dust has settled

presumably these types of thefts are due to the vastly improved security of modern cars - in that they need the keys

Here in coventry there has been a spate of car jackings, in the last 8 months 2 M135i, a mate of mines mother returned home with a child, only to have 2 masked men take the keys for his S3, later found in Birmingham with all door cards removed,obviously looking for a tracker. 2 golf Rs within days of each other, one owner describes how he realised he was being watched when locking the car, he runs into his mates house, only for 2 masked men follow him, kick the door down and batter him for the keys.

Oh, just had a look in the coventry telegraph, 36 year old woman battered with baseball bat for not handing the keys over for her S3.

Anybody who has friends or family with the above cars in the coventry/ Birmingham area please ask them to be vigilant as its pretty obvious a highly organised gang are operating.

This is what I ended up doing as I'm out in the sticks, after one day when 3 Romanian gypsy types turned up wanting scrap metal/ casing the joint, I was working outside so had tools to hand but I still felt very vulnerable, it's really not nice when people come along and take things and intimidate you.

The stuff as has been said can be replaced but it messes with your head more than anything, had me stashing weapons around my property and carrying a knife when I went outside for weeks after wondering if they were going to come back and have a pop.

Got myself a Cane Corso now, he's a big lad and I've Encouraged him to not like strange blokes, don't know if he'd be any good in a situation but he stops everyone dead in their tracks when he comes up to them and starts leaning on them. :lol1:

sadly this has become the norm, doesn't matter where you live, they want it its gone,

saving grace is the keys were down stairs!! fusck what the ins say,

a customer of ours had his s3 stolen and they asked the same, about the keys, you should be able to leave them on your windowsill they have still broken and entered to take the feckers,

round here its focus st/rs that are hot property at the moment,

luckily I cant afford cars like this as id never sleep!

sorry to say the ins will give it you back if they find it, they will do any damage and change the locks, its then up to you to get rid

Focus St/rs are easy to steal don't even need the keys, just a laptop with the right program

Drove up to Scotland in mine this weekend, it is an immense little car... Driven at 9/10ths all weekend; it was faultless :D

Here she is running VWR springs with stock electronic dampers which are to be swapped out for a set of Bilstein B16 PSS10s on the weekend.

* Wagner IC
* VWR Induction Kit
* BCS turbo back exhaust
* Uprated brakes
* Custom map

Word of warning on the BCS; I've fitted a few of these and had check engine light issues (oxygen sensor/ cat related). Custom map should fix it though.

Clever, competent, quick, classy and smooth, but 5,000 miles in I'm finding the Golf R a hard car to love.

Took an early morning cross-country dash to Aberystwyth for breakfast at the weekend via the ‘most dangerous road in Wales’.

Left the Golf R at home and took the Sube Wagon instead. It’s rawer, noisier, thirstier and more basic than the Golf but far more fun.
