Golf R Owners.....
Anyone who has a MK7 Golf R and used to own a 2 or 2.5ltr Newage?
What do think of the R in comparison in respect of drive, power and fun?
Have you remapped the R and how has that changed the above?
I'm looking to get shot of my JDM Hawkeye weekend toy and whilst I appreciate for the most part, I'm going to be struggling to match the power level (for what I'm prepared to spend), I can get past that if I still get a buzz as a weekend blaster.
My biggest concern is that it's "just" a Golf....... great for a daily plodder, but this isn't what it will be used for.
Look forward to your comments.

I reckon the 'just a Golf' thing will get to you..

The Golf certainly is very competent - way more so than previous versions of the R. But that might not make it such a fun weekend toy.

Mmmmm....
OK, I need to look at something else then. lol
It's not all about power, but it's gotta have some go whatever it is. Most importantly I need to want to drive it, rather than it just being a car (if you know what I mean). I can't see the Golf doing that for me?

Come out on a B road in my M135i: sport+ mode, sport gearbox engaged. I'm fairly certain you'd find it quite exciting

Not sure about..... I love the previous M3 with DCT. Flaming thing won't fit in a standard garage though!

I've been looking at a Z4 35is..... same engine but also with the added flip-top. Never had a flip-top before and always said I'd get one at some point. That would add something different to the mix, along with it being a 2 seater.

The Z4 actually has the older N54 engine but it's tuned up to over 330bhp; it's rapid but the roof weight does blunt it a lot. Someone on here has one but I can't remember who it was!
Worth trying a Cayman if you're thinking 2 seats.

Not much offers the raw feel of a Scooby, unless its a Evo. The R is quick but being German its also going to be good quality & usable with the family etc when needed. The same cant be said of Scoobys

Though i still have the Scooby as just a track toy and hoon car. The R is used as a daily drive for work and school run. On the road there is nothing in it between tye two. Obviously you do miss the noises that the Scooby makes and that wallop of torque from the Scooby. But im sure the remap on the R will even that out.
For me what makes the R so much better for my needs is the: comfort of cabin, quality of build and interior, the amazing DSG gearbox, various Race and Eco modes, all the creature comforts such as Radar cruise control, traffic master satnav, reverse camera, dab radio, touch screen infotainment, amazing interior control positioning and lighting, ease of driving. As well as all that, it is seriously quick point to point with superb brakes and a great gearbox. The handling is a little softer than a std scooby but in a good way, it offers time and feedback for adjustments while pushing. I think all it needs is that little extra power and torque from a remap to make it even better.

The only one I would really consider is the Turbo S, and to be honest, that's too rich for a 2nd car that won't see a lot of use in all reality. I'm happy to blow £30k on a weekend blaster..... I'd probably push a tad more for the right car, but in any case it would need to give me a boner, else I'll be stuck with the scoob (which is not really where I want to be moving forward tbh).

You sure his garage is standard single size? I haven't actually tried to get one in, but based on the measurements I doubt I would be able to get out of it.
I was going to get a E92 M3 last year, but it was touch and go if it would fit in the garage and I would be able to get out of it, what with it being a coupe (so longer doors). It's tight enough getting out of my Hawkeye and that's quite a bit narrower than these kinds of cars.

Shaun, bike?
Dump ~£1K on training and a licence (a month at most, and winter is the best time to do it)
Then another £1K+ on a lid and some proper leathers/gloves/boots
Then finally, £2K on an older 900cc+ old "supersports".
£4K tops, all in.
You won't corner as well to start with (if ever) but it'll be an experience and set you up for next spring/summer for blowing away *almost* everything else on the roads away in a straight line. Try it, and get bored with it, it's worth the experience.

If it were me I'd be looking at older 911's or a BMW Z3M Coupe, one or the other is what I'll be getting in a few years. Both have the fun factor and sense of occasion. I don't think there'll be a weekend you won't look forward to when one of those puppies is parked in the garage.
I think the Porsche just edges it for me, but the one I end up with will depend on what pops up when the money is burning a hole in my pocket, with £30k to spend you should be looking at the very finest examples of either, and you won't lose a penny.
As for the Golf R, I can't think of a less inspiring £30k weekend toy, thanks but no thanks.

1M is a Coupe. Not Golf like at all. Chalk & cheese.

I'll get shot down in flames but maybe try an M135i - lightly used prices are good (even new prices are very impressive), they are very quick, pretty lairy near/on the limit but comfy and well specced enough to be able to do a trans Europe thrash (which we've done). The looks don't suit all (or in fact many!) but get past that and it's the only hyper hatch on the market that is RWD, has a six pot nutter engine and has enough go to scare the unwary. Oh and they're small too.
I love Exiges but they are very little and focussed.

To give some context to what I've seriously considered so far:
- New STI
- Z4M
- Z4 35is
- TTRS
The TTRS is probably grabbing my ***** at the moment. It has the looks, is good on the road and has enough grunt (with just a simple remap these will produce over 400bhp!). Being a soft top adds to the occasion for me. Downside is that they are as rare as hens teeth, so choice is limited.
Ironically I would really love to get the new STI, but I just know that's going to be a whole world of pain...... but at least pain that I'd be aware of. lol
Basically I'll end up keeping my Hawkeye.... I can see it!!!
Xline,
Been there and done that, and unfortunately had a couple of accidents along the way. I always fancied getting another bike, but it would be in addition to the weekend blaster AND I'd need a garage extension to store it. It's probably not going to happen.
zip106,
I struggled to get into one (I'm 6ft 6") when the car was parked in a showroom. In a single garage I'd have no chance!
Ditch,
I really don't like the Z3M for a number of reasons. It's old and (imo) ugly.
Running cost associated to Porsche **** the life out of me, and tbh, they don't really grip my ****. The only one I would hanker for is the turbo, which is way out of my price consideration.
jameswrx,
It's amazing how small standard sized garages are. I've even considered in getting it extended out just because of this, but how far is that going "just" for a weekend car.
Devildog,
My misunderstanding.... I was thinking of the M135i when I said that.
They do look nice and I suspect go well..... they are serious cash though, and a bit too rich for what I'm looking to spend.
