Default Outback H6 My03 should I

Just been offered an Outback H6.

its on a 03 plate with 100K on the clock.

Its got full service history - main dealer - Indy & Franchise

Car drives nicely and goes through the autobox well.

Everything works as it should,

Only 2 niggles

Fuel consumption -At a full tank, it was only showing 300 mile range eek

When i asked his mpg, It was low teens for his driving and 3xx something for his other half

Autobox fluid

Checked the autobox oil on return from the test drive ..

it was a light brown colour and smelt a little bit burnt (hmmm)

I know it should be red and not burnt...

The guy admited he liked to overtake a lot ()

Do i walk or do i stay,

Ive heard the H6 is a reliable lump, but would need some confirmation on that. and its got a chain instead of a belt for the cams

What do you think?

Get yourself over to uklegacy.com as you will get better advice over there.

The H6 is a good engine although thirsty as you have found out. Can't comment on the autobox as only used manuals

ATF can be various colours. If an 03 is it last of Mk 3 or start of Mk 4?

I have the 5EAT in my 53 plate Mk 4 3.0R saloon and changed the trans oil a few weeks ago. It was light brown and the new stuff was golden (used HP stuff from OPIE, 5EAT is fussy).

Spoke to the Scoob specialist i used to use when i had the wagon today about it.

He basically said change the transfluid & filter and dont worry, the boxes are very good...

Now just got to see if a can cope with tank range of 300 miles for £80, or do i look elsewhere
