I've got a 205 GTI road rally car and dropped a GTI6 engine in it and that's pretty quick and revs well, a boy I know has a GTI6 and uses that on road rally's and he says it handles better than a 205. If I was to buy one I'd go for a Rallye if you can get hold of a tidy one??
IMO I'd favour a 172 or 182 Sport Clio over the 306.
Get onto the GTI6 forum and have a butchers on there cause your hardly likely to get many thumbs up on a Subaru forum.

dude the wheel bearings are poo,
rear sub frame mounts poo
rear sub frame siezes as water gets to hub bearings and rots it from inside out ,half the decent subframes sold u will end up getting a refurbed one (£250 min )
electric wiring (interior ,exterior is a joke ) .buts thats french anyway.
either a good gti6 (if gearbox ain,t poo)
or rallye ..same thing about gearbox.
my advice is gonna hurt to say it clio 172 or 182
yes you can super charge but basic kit is £2500 to get it running then remap and other bits add another £500+ as when i had my 306 gti i was following a build thread
how about a astra gsi 200bhp from factory ,these have grown on me or evan a vxr they must be coming down in price

Cheers for the replies. I've owned three Clio sports before, phase 1, phase 2 (track car) and a 182. Allways fancied a rallye or gti but I may have missed that boat unless very lucky. I love my car and only before when in the mood it's quick, very. I just get bored lol.

Had a white rallye that I regret selling most days! Had a couple of gti's after and to be honest they're fantastic cars! I don't feel as some previous comments are realistic. At 167bhp and 0-60 in 6.9secs and top speed of 147mph they'd give any standard turbo 2000 an embarrassing time! Not only are they cheap to buy, cheap fuel and even cheaper insurance.
A few simple modifications on suspension with tried and tested methods already from 306gti forum and you'll be eating B roads for fun!
Parts are readily available, gearbox problems a new one on me! The bE3 on 205 spits the diff if wheel spun a lot!
Rear beam £250? That's cheap compared to a Bilsten strut which is only one side!
Electrics and interior, we on a Japanese forum aren't we lol!
There's 2 main problems to look for when buying!
1. Is it a tapper? Listen for tapping noise from head. Recon head £350
2. Rear beam! Look for uneven tyre wear on rears.
Buy one and have fun!
260bhp supercharged ones selling for 4k now so could be interesting depending on budget!
Pas I have a P1 so I am not a biased Peugeot warrior!

On the basis of having run a D-Turbo and having lift off over-steer on demand on that, the GTI-6 or Rallye would be massive fun. In many ways I think our D-Turbo was more fun as a road car than our WRX though obviously not as fast, but speed isn't everything as the BRZ/GT86 is proving. Only downside of the Pug was that it was nothing like a well-built car...
So, to the OP, if you can find a clean one, it'd be well-worth checking out. They were highly rated by EVO in their day.

Mate of mine had a tuned 306 Rallye, only about 225bhp. It basically melted over the years (body, suspension, engine mounts and everything else in between) and when I drove it I was not overly thrilled, then again my own car was an Impreza STi at the time

Last of the great Pug hot hatches (along with the 106)
Had a phase 1 and loved it. Handled like a GTI should and had a similar ethos to the 205 in that it wasn't hugely powerful but it was enough and as a package a great car.
