There's the new clio cup version coming out soon....
Available only in blue, it will be stripped down version weighing just 950kilos (from 1030kg) but running 170bhp so nearly 180bhp per ton, and after traction, quick. And the best thing....its just £13k from Renault (so other sources even cheaper!) and nearly 40mpg! Maybe get one as a second car.....

"No worry to a scooby unless driven very well."
Obviously, as you can see by my user name, I'm going to be biased, but in all honesty you would be surprised as to how minimal the difference is between a 172 and a standard UK Impreza both on track and down the average A/B road.
I've had mine for 18 months and am pretty pleased with it, but my '18 month bug' has kicked in and my eyes have started wondering - mostly in the direction of Lotus Elise's
Andy.

I have had a new shape 172 for about 9 months now. To be honest, I am not Michael Schumacher, but i think i have learnt to control the car well, and i have embarassed some much larger, more powerful cars in it.
When your mate picks it up, make sure he gets the headlamp washers sorted - they have to be glued in or they fly out, and a real common fault is a buzzing inside that is coming from the panel next to the reading lights. This is a fan for the CC system that needs replacing.
Other than that, my car has 12500 miles on and a PiperX Viper kit on order for it (should arrive next week ) and it goes like a rocket. Tell your mate that it will eat front tyres. My first set were down to 1.1mm on 8300 miles and the second set are now on 5mm at 12300 miles
