Default Tow car recomendations?

Right, I'm going to need to tow a boat - circa 1600kgs all in, including the trailer. At the moment I am looking to swap my company car with a colleague for the summer months - from my A6 to his RAV4. I know the RAV4 will pull the boat without issue, but it's a short term fix.
Later I'll be needing a tow car of my own. At the moment I'm possibly looking at a cheap Disco, say £500 worth. Long term I'd change this to newer TD5 around £5-£6k in value. Also, at some stage I may buy a larger boat so then I'd need the 3500kg limit of the Disco. Any other suggestions?

Older Defender? Tows anything, doesn't care what shape the beach is.

Ours dragged a 1.5 tonne A3 up a 1 in 3 hill out of a ditch. Not that many 4x4s could have done the same.

Yeah, I've thought about a Defender, but it'll also be driven by my wife so she'll need (want) something a little more refined.

Land Rover Discovery would be my choice All the pull of a defender but some of the comfort of a Range Rover

Think you are on with the Disco.

Other alternatives are the obvious really - Shogun, Land Cruiser that sort of thing. You can probably get an import Hilux Surf for not a lot of pennies. Beyond that it's the designer pick up truck type kit I think!

5t.

Cheers for the input and offers guys. I guess I'll probably go with a disco then. Only problem is living in Cornwall the salt air tends to rot these quite quickly!

My mate will be happy to hear that as he did the engine management on them.
