Default Bargain Super-saloons!

What's going? the prices for BMW M5, legendary motors IMO, for the price of a hot hatch! A little over 5 year old, an E60 507BHP BMW M5 under £16k, granted they're high mileage but nothing they can't handle.

Buying them is okay it's just the running costs, especially if something goes wrong.

Mad isnt it! Plenty of decent cars out there for 10 - 15k. Madness when you look at the price of something like a mid range Astra or Focus and its £20k!

Yes and no. Higher petrol, insurance costs, etc. than a new Astra for example but how much will you loose in depreciation over the 3 years? Maybe £500? Compare that to £8000 that you will loose on the Astra and it will need a lot of petrol to make that up.

I had a 99 M5.

Fuel costs arent bad actually. 30mpg is easily acheived because of the ultra tall 6th gear.

Its the price of tyres that made me sell it. I needed them eveytime I needed tax. Almost a grand for 2 tyres and 6 month tax. You dont get a spare with an M5 so you have to buy runflats and theyre 275x18 on rear.

.........and a 300bhp Subaru would destroy it on A roads.

I cant believe how little these are going for. Take your pick, add another £5k and you get a newer one with 55k on the clock. Go to £25,000 and you find 35,000milers! I thought they were supposed to be good at holding their value.

Found a few more alternatives. It's tempting to get one, I'd love an E60 M5, delimited they can go up to 200 mph, you can't go faster for less! But I fear the running costs as a family car would be ruinous! Looks like the high VED and petrol prices are gradually working!!

That E55 is a cracker. I personally dont like VWs and probably never will due to numerous bad experiences with them and their dealers. The Audi is getting a little old but a good price and milage.

That Phaeton's just great. You wouldn't give it a second glance.I know my wife would think I'd come home with a completely boring family saloon!

Depends on why it was cat D

Its fine so long as you pay a cat D price (i.e much cheaper), its been repaired well, and the seller informs you it has a Cat D marker.

Cat C, I'd run away from though.

FWIW When looking at M5s etc, There are plenty of HPI clear cars out there that have previously been heavily damaged and been repaired by the insurer. So come up clear on any checks. Usually these are the cars that were smashed when they were less than 12months old (and so economical to repair). Where a 5yr old version of the same car would be cat C or D due to its depreciation.

I wouldn't touch an M5 without a BMW warranty.
They're very tempting though..

Starting price on a standard M5 was around £62k, with options they went for around £65k-70k. That is some massive hit with depreciation!! M6's are look like they're going for the same.

But these are lemon cars (in terms of the market, not the cars themselves!!)

Incredibly limited market second hand. Those that can genuinely afford one buy them new (or their company does) hence terrible depreciation

Thereafter....aren't many people who could run one of these however much we would all love to

I'm not sure anybody ever said they were good at holding their value, I went into it with my eyes wide open.

Also don't forget that though some might find it a lot of car for £20ishk probably many people like me who have owned one for many years are ready to move on. Many of us are waiting to see what the new M5 is like and I reckon that will cost £85k+ with some decent options (considering my new 535dMS has a rrp of £56k)

I've traded mine in for £18k, I may have got some more for it by selling it privately but I can't be bothered with the hassle. Don't want a bunch of test pilots knocking on my door.

I've never even driven the 535d but had a 530d as a weekend demo car and was very impressed by it, the 535d has about 50 BHP more than the 530d so should be quite good. The diesels have a lot of torque that for town driving make them feel almost as fast as the M5, and that's the majority of my driving.

I'll either hang on to the 535d or swap back to the new M5 when it's about a year old ie 2012/2013. If fuel has hit £2/litre by then I'll stick with the diesel!

Sounds like a wise plan. One question though, if you can afford to sell your M5 for £18k to by a new 535d and sell that after a year (where you will be hit hardest in depreciation) for a new M5 are you bothered about petrol prices reaching £2/ltr?

That's a very good question. To be honest its a psychological thing, I don't mind paying for something I want and will then own but the endless cost of fuel annoys me.
Its the amount I have to keep spending at the pump that continually reminds me of how much money I'm wasting. With the car I feel guilty for a few weeks after buying it and then forget about it.

But I agree, in reality its a bit of a flawed theory on my part.

What if you got a weekly depreciation bill? That might put the cost of fuel into perspective. I depreciate my Evo 8 at £100 a month and my Discovery 3 at £150 a month, so £250 depcreciation versus £360 on fuel. Howver, thanks to the snow, my Discovery is still worth the £15k I paid for it last June, so I'm "in credit". The way I judge cars is to look at all the costs over time (including depreciation and any finance charges). That way I get to own nice cars for the same overall cost as the aforementioned mid price Astra. I've never had a car that's depreciated at more than £3k a year over length of ownership. But if you have the money to own an expensive new car then it's your choice to have it and enjoy it!

Slightly (well, very!) off topic...even more annoying is diesel prices compared to petrol.

Always used to be so much cheaper.

Complete bar stewards with that rip off.
