Question

How is this box generally received?
The new SMGII seems to get rave reviews, but I can't find much on it's predecessor.

All opinions experiences appreciated!

much slower and the car loses some performance due to increase in weight and changing time.

Well this is what I'm going on so far from bm3w :

"Back in 1997 there were rumours that BMW would introduce some form of sequential gearbox for their flagship M3 machine.. at the time I was waiting for my new E36 M3 Evo coupe and there was a chance if I waited I could have the SMG gearbox added.. so I waited thinking it would be great. So come May 98 I took delivery of my new machine, fresh with the SMG unit that everyone had raved about, one of the first models to have the unit in the UK (at that time). After a few months of driving with the device I had decided that it wasnt very smooth, very jerky, not that quick and problematic. The car was returned to BMW more than 20 times with a failed SMG system, and it wasnt until a letter to BMW AG telling them they could keep the car and give me a new 330Ci in replacement that they replaced the whole system, the gearbox, the cluch, the onboard computer and the SMG computer.. and the problems went away.. but by now 2 years had passed, and although not having to "pump the clutch" while stuck in traffic the whole system was a pain in the ***, and had caused me more trouble than it had been worth.. and the decision was that I would never touch SMG again".

I'm after some more owner experiences if possible....

Cheers,

Muf
