Just to have fun around london. Stick a nice stereo in it and some good tyres and brakes. Will the 1.6 be ok ?? Their prices are tempting!!

power wise:
early cars (old shape) 1.6 - 115bhp
changed around k/l/m reg to 1.8 - 130bhp, 1.6 - 80bhp
new shapes 1.8 is 135bhp and 1.6 - 105 or 115bhp IIRC
or something like that anyway

Jawa's spot on. M-reg was about the time. On genuine UK cars (i.e. not rebadged Eunos Roadsters), the clues are:
- early 1.6 has Mazda decal on NSF bumper
- replacement 1.6 loses decal and has Mazda embossed badge in middle of bumper
The replacement 1.6 was a real budget model and retailed for less than the earlier cars. It lost power, alloys (most had aftermarket alloys - the early cars all had the faux-minilite style), electric windows, PAS, tasty momo steering wheel (nasty 323-type in its place) etc.
I've run both a 90G 1.6 and a 95M 1.6 with the lower output. The earlier one was certainly nippier, but I doubt that there's much to choose between an early 1.6 and a more recent 1.8. The low output 1.6 was not quick, but handled really well, like they all do. Buy on condition!!! I bought my 95M two Novembers ago for £7.9k @ 19k miles from the proverbial one lady owner. I sold it 9 months, 4 cheapo Falkens, 12 months tax and 10k miles later for £7.6k. The cheapest car I've *ever* owned (and the previous MX5 wasn't bad - only lost 2k over 2 years and 30k miles).
Cheers
Lee.
PS - I happen to have "A18 MXV" on a retention certificate if you end up with a 1.8!!! "A16 MXV" was sold with my first MX5.

OK, have driven both today.
We currently own a 91 1.6 and looking at changing it for a new one.
I was very surprised how little difference between them there is. The 1.6 had only 1 mile on the clock the 1.8 had 2500, so if anything the 1.6 will improve once run in.
We only drove them around town, the 1.8's extra power would have probably been more noticeable on a longer drive.
Our initial thought is to stick with the 1.6 unless we can get a very good deal on the 1.8.

Well I picked up a 1990 G Eunos Roadster 1.6 yesterday to tide me over until I can get another Scoob, am quite happy with it so far and it's quite nippy, easily breaks the ton mark and mid range acceleration isn't too bad. The handling needs to be improved though, I want to get a set of stiffer springs, where do I point my browser to find out what I can do to it?
Cheers,
Steve.
