Question Recommend me a Banger (second car) ?

Looking for a second car due to change in work, I use to take the train to work but now its not an option as the nearest station is a long way from the new work location. Dont want to be using the Scooby everyday for a commuting car since the distance to work isnt very far. I seem to live in an area with poor access across country as my nearest road is the dual carriageway and dont fancy riding a push bike along there.

Which leaves me with the idea of buying a good ol' Banger!!

Not looking for anything fancy at all, I really dont care what colour it is or even what make but any advice for the following?..

Reliable?
Good Fuel Economy?
Cheap to insure and run?

Any help would be much appreciated as there must be other people on here that run a second car to their Scooby.

Price wise, as cheap as possible but probably nothing more than £2000. Which would most probably be more than enough for a 'banger' but I dont want to buy a rusty tin that will break down the next day!

Cheers, M.

What was the mileage on the Focus out of interest?

It was 111000 mate which is not that bad for a modern diesel they can go on to over 200000 plus with no problems. The car had a dent in the drivers door and the front bumper needs painted but other than that it drives and looks like a new car. I also saw a 2003 Mondeo ghia in immaculate condition go for £1895 with 48000 miles on E-bay its the place to look as there allot of really cheap cars going .

£2000 will get you a very good car if u search about.

I would highly recommend any Nissan (Primera, Almera etc) around 1998-2000, possibly a Primera GT or SRI for £1000-£1500 tops, which will have 150bhp, great handling and four doors with plenty of room. On top of that they are very reliable and servicing is quite cheap and if you are handy at all you can do it all yourself for not much money!!

Alternatively you could do what I done and buy an older Toyota Carina E or similar, £500, taxed and MOT'd, NEVER needs anything, is easy to run and the only thing I have had to do to it for MOT in the last year and a half is thighten the handbrake....no joking!! Brilliant car and at £500 if anything goes wrong or happens to it sure its no big deal

The older Nissan's and Toyota's are hard to beat!!

I'd be thinking Japanese. Honda Civic probably, providing a boy racer hasn't been near it.

Nissan Almera or Micra. Zero image, 100% reliable, no cambelt to change. Almera has plenty of room and a 1.5 petrol will return 45 mpg on a run, 38 around town. I drove from Paris to York on a tank 5 up full of luggage.

Im selling my banger work car right now well within that budget. I use a MK3 GTi, 120k on the clock (fsh) its great start on the button, £180 fully comp, on a run it returns according to the trip computer 35mpg, And it goes ok.
I would recommend having a look at one, bullet proof engines too.

Ta Da! This is what I got as a second run-around car. I had to lower my budget a bit but after tralling auto trader for ages I found this...

Believe it or not, I didnt really want two red cars but oh well, it looks like the Scoobys baby brother now! lol

My aim was for low mileage, cheap insurance, cheap tax, good fuel economy and good reliability. There were alternatives - as mentioned above - but they were just a little out my price range.

It is a...

1997 VW Polo
1.0 Litre
65,000 miles
FSH
Long MOT and Tax
Decent radio headunit

for £900

Thanks for the help and info in the replies peeps!
