a civic typer R puts into perspective how bad my car is
was on the motorway when a young lad in a civic type R ep3 pulls up along side me on an empty stretch of m-way iam doing 60mph at this point so he looks accross gets my attention puts his foot down i put my foot down in the right gear my car was just faster than his over a long stretch but was neck and neck for ages.what was i driving a53 plate boxster s 3.2 260bhp how bad is my car???
forgot to say my car is supposed to be 200bhp/ton the civic type R is 166 bhp/ton
ive raced a golf gti the latest one on the m-way and again mines was faster but not alot in it.
whats a good hot hatch to get thats 2 or 3 years old that this will never happen again lol?

...at the risk of getting flamed for mentioning it again, a Focus ST??
Seems to find reasonable gains from basic mods, which will allow you to steadily drive away from an EP3 CTR without too much hassle.

yea i changed down to get the power before i floored it i was along side him at the start then moved behind him at the final part of the race so he prob thought he was holding me up where i knew there wasnt much in it when it was 3 figures!!!

Yea, my sister has an EP3 Premier and its a brilliant laugh to drive... quick, probably comparable to a PPP'd Classic UK Turbo in terms of straight line (50mph onwards) drag.
I can only imagine that a slightly heavier Focus ST with basic mods and c270bhp and c310lb/ft would show a bit of a straight line difference against an EP3 CTR with basic mods and c210bhp and c145lb/ft.

I had a new play with a Boxster S with my old CTR and as long as you know where the power band is you can keep up just fine. Focus ST is a nice car but when I took it out it felt utterly gutless which was a big disappointment. Maybe a Golf GTI with a Revo map on it would suit you more? Easy 270bhp then and if the 280bhp Edition 30 I took out is anything to go by they will be faster than most things on the road by a long way.
I disagree that it wont be noticeably faster than the Boxster, it will pull away from the Porsche if he was struggling with a c200bhp CTR.. and although I agree it won't be a night and day difference, the fact that the Ford/Vaux/Mazda/Golf etc is pulling steadily away will be noticeable to the Porsche owner IMO.

i dont know the limits of handling with the boxster as i cant tell much through the wheel its quite a numb driving experience where as the mx5 which i had before i could drive at the limit and could tell exactly how far i could push it and was a joy to drive in comparisson.i do believe mazda done a great job with the first mx5 there was a slogan they used which was japanese which translated as rider and horse as one which says it all really.

Sorry should have said it had a Richter remap taking it to around 280. This is a VW approved one too so you keep the warranty. It was rapid and my STI would have to be on top form to keep up. Was also very very composed on corners and never missed a beat regardless of how much power I put on at varying degrees of lock. Very very cool car.

Del, u sound like a man who is a tad hacked off with his motor....
May be the CTR wasn't standard .......a few choice mods making it breathe a bit better...?
The Boxster S is one car I was thinking about in the future but now I am having my doubts
but then again is it a big deal if it isn't that much faster ?
As has been said before, you need quite a power hike to really make a difference and in my experience on the roads lately it comes down to who is prepared to risk their life (which I would never do) so the 'other' guy always wins...good for them they deserved it, they risked their lives for it.........
Remember you are driving a nice open top Porsche and the other guy in his fast £8k hatch isn't................

To be honest an Escort RS could thrash a Ferrari but if I was in a 430 and some Ford flew by me I can't say i'd be looking on Pistonheads for an 80s hatchback...
Be happy with what you have, it's a brilliant car.

Sorry, but given the choice of a regular hatch or a Porsche, there's more to car ownership than outright bragging points down the pub (IMHO)
I would have one in a second, however, it doesn't suit my family lifestyle.

CTR's are excellent cars. My mate has got one and for under 5k I don't think you will find a more capable hot hatch. I drove it on a well known B road and was very impressive, my only gripe (if any) is the steering feels a bit 'wooly' compaired to my STi but I think that's due to the EPS, once you get used to it its not that much of a great deal.
Straight line racing on a motorway is quite pointless in my opinion, as said above you need a lot of power to pull away a decent gap. Get them both of a decent B road or better still a track and the boxer s will show the difference between both the chassis.

delcbr, I like your car, but it sounds like it is time for you to change it, but surely not for something FWD just to accelerate in a straight line, because that is all it might do better than your car, in the dry only.
If you do want to be sure of outdragging things like this, then 300 BHP/ton will mean you can't really tell if they're trying or not because they disappear. Double the power of your opposition usually makes the point.
You could buy a nice Supra, 600 BHP is quite easy on the stock engine, giving about 400 BHP/ton.

Dont let it put you off - they are superb car and handle and grip better (in the dry anyway) better than a Scoob, unfortunately in this day and age a lot of the hot hatches are 200bhp+ and will give a lot of fast cars a good run for the money.

Obviously they really fly (once moving) if the owner has gone down the forced induction route of supercharger/turbo, just attend Santapod/York quartermile to see a few hiting 10secs for fwd (!)
I know its only a basic comparision, but check the 60-100 figures out from my site below between a standard CTR, a Boxster S, and a 235bhp CTR, I always say if the 60-100 (ie. performance one moving) figures are within 10% then on the road there isn't going too much of a noticable difference, going by this, I would say the CTR had some mods:
STANDARD CIVIC TYPE R 197BHP
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 197
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1203
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 166.39
0 - 60 (Secs) : 6.60
0 - 100 (Secs) : 16.84 (autocar timed one 16.2secs to 100)
60 - 100 (Secs) : 10.27
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.96
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 94.28
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.76
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 95.93
BOXSTER 3.2 S 260BHP
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 260
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1320
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 200.13
0 - 60 (Secs) : 5.50
0 - 100 (Secs) : 13.59
60 - 100 (Secs) : 8.09
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.84
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 100.91
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.74
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 102.07
MODIFIED CIVIC TYPE R - say 235BHP (if it can get its power down):
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 235
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1190
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 200.65
0 - 60 (Secs) : 5.67
0 - 100 (Secs) : 13.75
60 - 100 (Secs) : 8.08
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.04
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 101.02
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.84
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 102.83
I had a giggle with a CTR once in my 260 bhp Scoob admittedley only up to the legal limit. I panned it from the lights, especially with my awd traction but i was amazed how close this car was to me. It must have been at most a car length behind me over 200 yards.
As another poster has said, unless you punching more than 100bhp thatn the other car then the difference wont be that great.
CTR's seem a very competant car.

I'd like another go now I'm running nearly 290BHP just to see how true the above quote is..
