Replacing Scoob with a 996 - viable?
#1
Most people think I'm crazy when I tell them I'm thinking of trading the scoob up for a 996 coupe (non turbo).
I am told that this car is a rich mans toy and that I could never afford to run it.
I do not pay for petrol as I have a fuel card. I have seen the website of a company (paragon) in East Sussex who do servicing for between £180 and £295.
I am not wealthy, but have gotten used to the costs of owning the scoob. Would I be biting off more than I could chew if I were to buy a 996 for around £30k?

I seriously doubt you would find the costs that frightening. On a 996 my colleague bought standard services and insurance costs were very similar - it's just when you get to big services and minor repairs cost spiral. But bought well and looked after there should be no major surprises.

Elvis,
Should be OK really. You'll not get a 996 unless it has galactic mileage for less than £38K, as the 993's are still holding their value well. As far as serviceing goes, a 996 is looking very reasonable. Intervals are 12,000 miles, and they seem close to Scooby prices if looked at over a 3 year period.
Plus, you get a beautifully put together car, great noise, and the ladies love them far more than an Impreza. If you can afford to do it, go for it. The insurance will be cheaper than an Impreza too, as I found out a while back.

Hmmm. the question is whether I CAN afford it.
I'm still concerned about the possibility of silly repair bills.
Insurance surely can't be cheaper than the scoob. I only pay £950 fully comp with full NCB. I believe average for 911 insurance is approx £1900?
I do a fair few miles as well so am concerned that I could end up with a car I can't afford to service.
If they are similar in servicing costs to the scoob, then perhaps I'll take the plunge.
£38 is definitely out of my range though. I did see a 996 with 64k for £29!
If that was a one off then maybe I should be looking at a 993?
I could do with something with less miles anyway.

Not sure but I've just had first 12 month service only 15KKM(actually free from dealer) but the bill which I signed was for about 220quid, not much more than a lookover/valet and oil change. Tyres are probably a bit more and my rears probably only have about 4-5 K Miles left so that'll be about 16K on a set of rears.(I'm getting computer figure of 28MPG, including Autobahn but mostly round town).
No doubt they look much much better than Scoob, performance wise its definately not as seat as the pants as the scoob and no big turbo push into the seat(I had Sti Wagon before) but easily as fast and certainly a smoother more balanced acceleration. I've got tiptronic and it just makes you lazy on the driving front. However as said earlier the sound is fantasic and it looks great(silver and black interior). I ended up with 996 C4 as IMHO the inside of 993 was rubbish in comparison. In essence looks better sounds superb inside and goes really well and build quality(except bloody wipers) is excellent. Best of all the hi-fi turns itself up the faster you go.......LOL
Insurance quote for me in the UK was about 1800quid 2years ago aged 32 with Full NCD. So your probably looking at 2G easy. BTW not very practicle to be honest, especially C4 as the boot is full of diff.
Cheers

I've just checked German Autotrader..LOL and you'll get a blue 996 with 1998 with 41KKM for about 50K Euros(probably less if you haggle).
On the repairs front just stump up for a decent warranty and your insured for any big damage.
