Cool A4 2.8 litre quattro...

ok guys, just brought one of the above, and can i just say, for a P plater, what an absolute stonker..!...driving in scoobs for years, has made me totally forget what comfort is!...spec as follows:-

2.8 litre V6 quattro
full S4 spec leather
heated seats
climate control (clever as hell...does not allow you to turn on the air con, unless the outside temp is above 4 degrees!!)
ABS
2 front electric windows (dont ask...!)
electric sunroof
on board computer, with check function...
symphony stereo, crank it up, and no rattles..!
no rattles from the engine, and only 73k on the clock...
interior is as new..!

ok so the body work was tatty...but a 5 hour detail later..the paint work was gleaming, need to get the minor scratches out for the next time the sun comes out to play...

all i can say is i was gob smacked, at how smooth the V6 is, and how torquey it is...great cruiser, ok a little nose heavy into the corners..and its a strange feeling when the back end steps out..the quattro and EB something takes over, to bring you back in line...!its nice to be able to listen to music, or talk when cruising at 80mph..!..and its quit frugal...45 pounds of jungle juice, and i got from glasgow to carlisle, then onto bradford, and back to carlisle...my scoob will probably do half of that mileage...!...

now what can i do to her...suspension wise so that i do not upset the quattro system?...any help will be much appreciated!!...wheels i shall get sorted after wards!!....

the colour is the wired bronze colour...(i know...)

I had a 2.8 Audi A6 Quattro for a while, it had done 144k when i sold it and didn't miss a beat. Not as fast as my Scoob on acceleration but once on the move above a certain speed it would show it a clean pair of heels.

It was a bit of a wallowy old bus but very comfortable and pretty quick

Suspension wise, you should go for H & R ARB's. Many people state that these transform the B5 RS4 steering and body control, so no reason to assume why this wouldn't do the same for this quattro. Damping is I think down to the owner in a car like this. Try rs246.com. lots of advice over there for the B5 A4.

cool, i shall try to get some pics up, just before the weekend....

wallow...thats the word that i would use for the suspension set up, but boy..the quattro set up is something else....i will be sorting the suspension..thats for sure, then the wheels....

its wierd driving it through the gears though, i keep expecting to hear the rush of induction..the flat four rumble, and an awesome feeling of acceleration...but no.....i get smooth pic up..no noise...i need my pipe and slippers...!

True. Theres a guy local to me who specialises in Audis and he said the first thing to do when buying an S4 (As I was looking at buying one he had) was H&R rear ARB. The S4 wasn't as fast on acceleration as my Impreza but past 100 the audi kept going long after my weedy TD04 ran out of puff.

Not sure if it'll be the same for the 2.6 but the S4 was nearly twice the price of my modded UK turbo to insure.

my insurance on this is not too bad either..£490 fully comp...compared to the £870 for the scoob...

i am going to order the H&S springs end of this month..not bad price..just £180 ish for a set of 4...!

not sure what the S4 handles like, but this is very 'bouncy' lets just say...!

Do you not find it a bit soft and clunky to drive, with little driver feedback?

I've got an A6 with the same engine, etc - same car really, just bigger. It built well, but I find Audis of this era to be very numbing and a touch dull to drive.

Mine's got nigh on 200k on the clock and is completely rust free, clean as a whistle and drives like a 50k mile motor. Just dull IMO. I guess with a few alterations you can improve the feel of it a bit.

Mine's the estate - only use it for transporting the dogs, the tip run and the odd booze cruise!! Make sure the cam belt's been done or it will eat your engine BTW .

hi

Cam belt has been done, got the reciepts to prove..first thing that i looked for..!...yes to all of the above..very dull to drive..dead steering..soft and bloody clunky..!H&R springs bring it lower and stiffer, going to order these at the end of the month..a rather cheap up grade to enhance the handling, but still a heavy beast though, TBH i am enjoying driving her..its just nice, and not raw...will post pics once all of the bits are done, and i hope to get some wheels on her, any thoughts guys??

Decent price for a car with that mileage.

I have no interest in mine, as it's a workhorse!! I doubt they are easy to get any further horses from? Have you looked into that area?

Very lazy lump for the CC/bhp result.

me too...workhorse and nothing more...the strangest thing about it is, the fact that i keep on forgetting to change gear, and stay in 2nd all through town..and change when i remember...!

nah never looked at more BHP extraction...i suppose the straight through/filter/airbox and remap options, but even then i would be surprised at seeing any thing more that 3o bhp coming of it..!

The 3.0TDI's are supposed to be really cracking and even better when mapped. Been tempted with a later S-line A4 3.0TDI quattro many a time and I still am. I recently bought / jumped back into a Scoob STI8, and love it. But 9/10 times I just want to get from point A to point B with no fuss quickly and comfortably.

Its just a shame Audi ran the same interior for what seemed to be many years, and say a 04/05 A4 sline has a dated interior IMO.

I had a 2.6 Avant Audi 80 for a while, sounded great but was a bit wheezy and not that fast, build quality was epic, its still going, mate of my dads bought it.

I preffered the 2.0 5 pot 100, not far off performance wise, sounded as nice, a lot better on juice and more sporty feeling once I remeoved the cat, which also gave it a full on Quattro growl, strange on a proper grandad wagon. Was only 24 when I got it, dead cheap, mint and felt like I had arrived.

I had the 2.6 100 too. Really hard to get anything out of that engine and horrible to drive. Again, the build quality was trmendous - similar to pre 1995 mercs but without the rust.

That 2.6 was probably the least fun car to drive I have ever had. Zero driver feedback or feel.
