What auto - up to £2k?
Another what car thread.
Looking to spend up to £2k.
Preferably an estate, and preferably an Automatic.
Must do close to 30mpg or over if possible. Mid 20's is no good as I'll be doing a lot of miles.
Must be fairly quick (170BHP +)
Initial thoughts are for a Saab 9-5 2.3 turbo. Was also thinking along the Volvo T5 route, though from what I can see I wouldn't get close to 30mpg. Not sure if the V70 2.4T's are any good...
I do like early A6's but doubt they'd be in my price range. Would consider a saloon as long as it has a good sized boot.
Car can't be anything that would attract unwanted attention as it will be parked overnight in the middle of Sheffield. Would like it to be comfy too.
Any suggestions?

30mpg is almost impossible in an auto T5 - I imagine Saab may be similar.
IMO BMW make the best auto's going - my bro in law has a 130k mile E39 520 touring that is slow as **** but delightful to drive.
Sheffield is a mare to travel around, so pleasant suspension is a must a I guess.
I will have my fish and chips and get back with some idea's

I do like Omega's, but not sure of the economy of the quicker ones. I'll check it out. Thanks.
I have been looking at Audi A6's as well - can't afford an Avant, though there are 1.8T's and 2.4's in my price range.
I fancy chips now

I went to Woodseats fisheries - they still cook in lard
So, back to the cars. I usually take a manufacturers combined fuel consumption then knock 20% off. This is usually somewhere near what I get day to day. With this in mind, your 29mpg saab is now nearer 23.2. Best to do the calculations now, and get it right.
So realistically, you need a 38mpg auto which is more likely to be a diesel.

The petrol's are 4 pot which will be ok on performance but to get decent econamy you need to cruise anyway. I would try a V6 which will be 25mpg but much better than a 27mpg 4 pot.
Diesel all the way I say, but one last thing. With bio fuel on your door step, maybe you should look into the right diesel for the job Bio UK Fuels Ltd
My 306 run's 100% bio and it was £1.03/litre last fill
