Default Has anyone driven an R34 GTR?

I fancy one soon but haven't driven one. I had a go in a 33 once which was quite fun

I'm interested in the comparisson with an STi classic or otherwise - non DCCD.

I'd like to know how they should be driven, ie do you treat it like a RWD car which will save your *** if you get a bit silly, or an AWD car which will be a tail happy bugger.

Does it grip as well or better than a scoob?

Comments appreciated.

Really only interested if you have driven one in anger, rather than what you have heard from your mate Dave

Hopefully Chris Singleton can comment on this too!

Did someone mention my name

Shame my 34 recently went onto pastures new otherwise you could have popped over for a spin.

Even more of a shame that you've just missed out on porkies car over on the gtr forum, went for under £25k in the end, still not cheap, but for the parts it had on you couldn't build one to that spec and I've not even seen standardish cars sell that cheap before.

I'd certainly treat the car like you would a rear wheel drive car, the back will step out but it's relatively easy to control and quite predictable. Car still has awesome levels of grip. If you're running around 500bhp the back can step out when you floor it in a straight line It's very easy to get used to, nothing quite like powering off a roundabout with a little wag of the tail

I'd certainly recommend you invest in a skylab torque split controller if you're used to the characteristics of a scooby. Will make the car perform almost the same, had one fitted to my 33 and my 34 and they're a quality bit of kit for little outlay. Used mine at brands and was able to power out of all the bends with not a hint of oversteer.

Hard to compare to a classic scooby, very much chalk and cheese. You think I'd be able to having owned a classic STI RA before the 34 and gone back to classic WRX RA after it The 34 just feels so special to drive and has incredible road presence. The gearing is exceptionally long, I'm sure you can break the national speed limit in 2nd . Not much happens below 3k revs but what a rush once you hit full boost.

Prices are all over the shop at the moment, for what they cost, seems to be between £23-30k I can't think of another car I'd personally rather own. I'm sure I read that SVA, ESVA, tests, laws or whatever they're called are changing so that 10 year old cars can't be imported like before so good examples should hold they're money. I don't see why the new GTR should affect prices either when they're going to be £30-40k more than a decent 34.

By far the best car I've owned/driven and if funds permitted I'd have another in an instant. Unfortunately, my current circumstances meant I couldn't have such a large sum of money tied up in a weekend toy, shame with summer just around the corner.

Out of interest, have you tried a 2.5 classic scooby, my current RA delivers say 90% of the thrills of the skyline at a fraction of the cost. I just have to put a paperbag over my head incase people recognise me driving around in 13 year old car that sounds like a tractor when you start it

Any more questions mate, just ask

Good cars, great engines. Not sure on the looks though. With a Nismo kit they rock.

Stock Page

Thats a fully built R33 which was just finished when i picked up my scoob. Paul's work quality is awesome so id have a look at that. Its a true monster.

My name is Dave I drive an R33 GTR daily.

They drive like a RWD car and up to a point will save your ***, but they are not tame and are much less forgiving than a Scoob. A Scoob will understeer it's way into oblivion when pushed, with the occasional tail wag. A GTR on the same corner under the same conditions could decide to step it's **** out, understeer or both.

There's a roundabout I go round on my way home every night and I always provoke it a little. 9 times out of 10 it either sticks like sh*t to a blanket or steps out enough in a controlled manner. Last night it did a huge 4 wheel drift that required me to jump of the gas and clench my sphincter.

The key to the GTRs brilliance is that it tells you everything it's doing so you can react (badly in my case 'cos I'm a crap driver).

Drive it properly and it's amazing. Get flippant with you and you'll end up going backwards through a hedge.

They probably don't grip as well as a Scoob (mine has Cheng Shin Deathmaster tyres on it) but it definitely handles a hell of a lot better.

Interesting comments all.

Chris, thanks for the detailed reply! Would have been great to have a look round yours. I think it's just one of those cars, like the 22b, which have been very high up my dream car list. I hear what you are saying about the 2.5l scoob and it's often something i've though of. The lure of the GTR is the icon status and road presence above all else!

I've not tried a 2.5 scoob - the last one I drove was an 03 JDM and it really was a nice place to be. I chose the Evo over it as i'd never had one and I preferred the image. I'd bet a 2.5 isn't too far off what the GTR is capable of.

My dilemma is that I think 25k is the right money for a 30-40k mile one with a few tweaks - but I look at what I paid for a showroom Evo 8 last year (16k) and wonder if it's mad to pay that for a 8-9 year old car. I know it's inital price was over double when new though! I will get over that mental hurdle im sure

I know a company who can get me a fresh import for about 25k also, so that could be an option. Shame i'm too impatient for that though

Fraser - only the 34 interests me.

Dave, I drive an S2000 at the mo (my second one) and driving it hard requires some bottle! It's very snappy - but great fun. So hopefully a GTR would be no worse.

I'm thinking an R34 GTR is my next motor but like you said, its a hell of a lot of cash to pay for a 10 year old motor.

Look stunning with the right mods and kit and drive superb.

I've got a feeling the prices will be dropping a fair bit in the next year, it seems they have been dragged down a bit recently from what I've seen. I may be wrong but it's just the way I see it from viewing various for sale threads from last year and now on these cars.

Try a 2.5 in a classic, different ball game alltogether

So who can import them? I know Matty of the gtr forum has one landing soon from Newera. I always thought with no model report and the E-SVA or whatever it's called fresh imports where nearly impossible to register.

I think you'll be able to find a nice example for £25k with some sensible mods. Personally, I'd steer clear of anything running much over 500bhp.

Was a big hurdle for me shelling out such a large sum of money (a lot more than £25k I might add ) for a 9 year old datsun also But I used to giggle with excitement like a little kid everytime I opened up the garage and just looked at it

Life's short, if you've got the disposable income and you want one then go for it. Not once did I regret my decision

If I won the lottery tomorrow, first thing I'd buy would be another 34............then a 35...............then a ferrari.............and so on

Ta Chris.

Looks amazing that one, but maybe a little too modified for me. It's higher than my budget so if anything went wrong i'd be a bit buggered!

I still can't decide between that and an Evo 9

I can't even bring myself to stick the S2000 up for sale yet!

Oh dear
