Hi,
Basically thinking of moving on from the scoob, nothing else really interests me apart from a Porsche.
A 993 or 996 is out of my price range so thinking of a Boxter/S
What experience has anyone got of these are they nice to drive how different to the scoob will it be performance wise etc.

You'll get 2 types of responses here:
1) Hardresser car, not as fast as a scoob, poor mans Porsche
2) Fantastic build, performance, chassis
I'm in the latter group, I drove an S a few years ago and thought it was fantastic. Performance is good, engine note is good, quality of materials used in the cabin is good.
Basically if you drive one, you'll want one.

My g/f has one, and it's brilliant. I absolutely love driving it, it's quick the handling is amazing and it feels very well built. Despite what people might say about it being gay/hairdressers car it attracts quite a bit of female attention as most people just see it as a Porsche, not a poor mans Porsche and rightly so.
Main thing to look out for on them is the rear main seal mainly on earlier models. It can be a real problem with them, try to find one that has had the RMS upgraded.
Can't recommend them enough.

As it happens, today I've taken custody of my mate's 2003MY Boxster S as he's off overseas for work for a couple of years.
I've driven these cars before, but some years ago, and TBH I'd forgotten just how good they are. They're not mega-quick, but for a road car on today's roads they're easily quick enough (about 14secs to 100mph), handling is sublime, and they sound lovely. All the controls are perfectly weighted, and it feels totally solid on the road. The only thing that lets the car down a little is some cheap feeling switchgear.
The car is mine to use whilst I sell it on his behalf, but after driving it today I'm seriously tempted to keep the thing for myself.

I drove a Boxster S a couple of years ago, when I was looking to change my Elise, and was a bit underwhelmed. Obviously it was extremely competent, well built etc. and really the ideal everyday sportscar, but to me didn't feel quite special enough to merit purchase - maybe it's just too good.
Also, the poor man's Porsche image to those who can't afford or haven't driven one is quite pervasive.
The Sales guy, recalled how he had been using one as his daily transport when once on a Motorway, a white van pulls alongside, passenger ducks down and a few seconds later handwritten sign appears saying ' Can't afford a 911 then?

Lovely car and I've only ever heard good things about them.
On a similar tack, I'd love a Cayman S myself, but the prices are too strong at the mo.
Is there much difference between the Boxster and Boxster S..?

thats just funny,
i bet the white van was a rusty ****e heap as well
Only buy a 3.2. My mate had one and loved it. 2.7 are not that quick. Personally i would by an S2000, but the up side is that whenever somebody asks you what car you drive, you can say Porsche - conversation over
I've been taking advantage of the nice weather and driving my friend's Boxster S again today. It's simply the best handling car I've ever driven, and the more I drive it the more I like it. My own car (335d M-Sport) is a competent enough handler and is a fantastic companion on any journey, but with the Porsche you're constantly wanting to pick the keys up and drive it just for the hell of it.
Go get yourself a nice long test drive.

I'll take 100 losers in white vans writing what ever signs they like for 1 of those students every now and again.

One thing is, don't break down in one, people take great pleasure in making the most of your misfortune. The thermostat went on hers, and it over heated on the motorway, at least 20 people beeped and gave me the finger or the V's whilst stood at the side of the road waiting for recovery.
I've had several Boxsters now and they are great cars! The old "can't afford a 911" is bollocks as 9 out of 10 people who say that could never afford one. I've got a 996 on it's way to me (the 2nd time i've bought/sold her) but i'll always be happy with another Boxster especially when the sun comes out

I think a lot of it comes down to people who have never been in one or driven one as back in the day I didnt think much to them. Didnt really slate them but didnt really take much notice. When my mate bought an S he took me out and it was like being a passenger in a go kart. Excellent handling and brakes were awesome (at one point I thought he had not seen a red light).
If I was in the market for a roadster and had the money Id get one but would have to be an S I think (arent they 280bhp now?). Guy at work has one of the latest shape (987?) and they look a lot better IMHO, but more aggressive lines.

Thank's for all the input guys, guess I now need to look around and get a couple of test drives arranged.
Brother has an 05 Plate Boxster S
Initial opinion was “Poor Man’s Porsche, Hair Dressers Car” etc
Then I got to drive it, which completely changed my opinion, very smooth to drive, not fantastic on acceleration but will easily manage 150mph, can be a little bit slippery with the back end, other than that a good car
Crap MPG if your heavy footed, but isnt everything these days?

The wife is having one shortly, so been looking into this myself.
We found a one man band up near Derby who deal's in Porsche's, sound fella. He let us drive one of his models he had for sale, 3.2s.
I have to say, after years of running these motors down I was quite surprised to be honest. It felt comfortable & note alien right from the get go & even with the roof down the ride was quite & acceptable.
It may be a model that receives the odd negative comment, however it's still a Porsche & still fall's under the quality car umbrella.
If your anywhere near Derby, try Paul French he's very helpfull indeed & is on the net.
