I nearly got taken out when turning left when 2 boys in a 944 turbo decided to treble the speed limit, C reg red one in Wilmslow, it was absolutely flying, first thought was 'cool' second was 'f*cking ****'/

Yours looks mint, how are they as a day to day proposition ?

I have kind of abandoned buying another car for a while, going to save up for my 911.

Around 2k a year would be a good budget to run one. If I was running a 944 everyday i'd get an S2 I think.

It's still not scratched the 911 itch, but it's still a great car for the money.

Hi Dave,

TBH i preferred the silver wheels, each to their own, it is a good looking car and yours is a particularly good example.

Ah, but these wheels were the scabiest 17 year old wheels you'd ever seen on Monday night. A quick favour from a mate and they look rather cool I reckon. 100% better than they did.

....and the 17 Inch wheels dont have Cup tyres on them

Not bad for an 80's car i suppose

Joking aside, that is seriously nice considering its not far off 20 year old.

Have you done any mods to the engine at all? (or anywhere else)

Dave, does this car have an AMD hot-film conversion (as its a 'Ring car Id be interested to know what suspension youre using. M030 std.? Also, was it built as an 030 and if not does it have an LSD?)?

Those crested centres are nice btw. I sworn never to buy another Porsche, but Im thinking about having my Scumball3000 car seam welded and keeping it for the weekends......

Thats not really so. The 3 litre cars werent short on torque like the 2.5 litre 'S' models were. The principal reason that S2s have faired so much better than the Ss, is that they dont need caning in order to make progress..... The design of the cylinder head and the cam drive chain is virtually identical, but failures are very rare compared to the original S.

The 3.0 S2 probably is the more sensible road car, the turbo is undoubtably faster, especially if you tweek it a bit.

For my money i would go for as cheap an S2 i could that was decent engine wise.

Strip all the crap out of it and fit some decent suspention and brakes.

You can probably get the S2 down to about 1200kgs with some work.

With a few cheap engin mods you are looking at 230bhp.

That makes a very nice package, especially track car for less than £6k

With the turbo its too easy to go down the modifying route, whcih costs lots of money.

The other option is to stick a nice Chevy v8 in an S2, £5k for the car and £3k for the engine.. 400bhp 400lbft.

If you were to do that then Id suggest starting with an M030 220 Turbo and fitting a 928S4 engine. Even Simon Buttercup is nly asking £1275 fior these now and youre looking at 316-345bhp on a standard inlet/exhaust. Cheaper prettier, lighter and it says Porsche on the inlet plenum..... Theyre blindingly quick too, a couple were built as a proposed upgrade for 924 series competitors and while the series didnt ever get off the ground, the cars did (especially at Cadwell Park)!

Don't think M030 suspension is that much of a draw these days as it's most likely shagged and in need of replacement.

You'd be just as well with a normal 944 and new suspension all round. At least that's what I plan to do with a 968.

edit nice 944 BTW and it looks pretty handy on the 'ring from what I've seen of it..........

No point the m030 koni set up os fine but not the best, besided it would be shagged anyway.

The S4 engine is heaviermore than an LS series chevy engine.

Not sure the conversion would be any easier, and parts would be significantly more expensive.

I guess if you can get hold of one for just over £1000 then it might make sense.

Isn't it just suspension, brakes and LSD all of which would be better renewed or can be added anyway?

Certainly wouldn't make me buy a car in worse condition just because it had it or even pay much of premium.

Think what you like. Im confident that I have forgotten more than you know about them, seeing as I dealt in the cars for ten years. I ran 944s 951s and 968s when they were current models, including a seam welded M030 specced lightweight hill climb car for four years.

M030 (exc. the transaxle) parts were worth well over £2,500 used, even tatty. Now youre looking at under £250 for good clean 968 parts.

You are a know-it-all Fat Boy Slim, but you dont know nearly as much as you think. Ten bob millionaires like you are the reason that I stopped dealing with these cars in 1999.

I feel so small and unworthy in your obviously omniscient presence..

Your name not Richard Head by any chance, well know Porsche enthusiast and collector of cheap M030 parts.

Try sticking to the subject and not bigging yourself up..

You are small and un-worthy. You are just another self-important "951 bore". The cars are virtually worthless now, rather like your insight on this thread.

Lightbulb m030?

Did this include just the shocks, springs and anti-roll bars and you had to specify option 220 (LSD) and big brakes or did it included these as well as the suspension upgrades?

No ones ever confirmed this to me, some say yes, some say no but most people specified the LSD and brakes at the same time does anyone know for sure?

Blimey, this got a bit heated. Here is a picture of my "virtually worthless" 944 Turbo S (Silver Rose spec).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/steve944t/sn.jpg

As others have pointed out, any M030 suspension will by now be way past its best, unless it has recently been rebuilt. I did intend to rebuild mine, but have recently installed KW Variant 3 suspension instead. Dave - I hope my cast-off M030 front struts are still serving you well

Cat7 - not really sure. On the Turbos, an LSD was standard for the later cars anyway, so did not form part of the M030. I think the front hubs are also different on M030-equipped cars, to enable fitment of the larger brakes. Could be wrong though, as I have never looked into the options in much detail.

My car has rebuilt 944 M030 front struts vavled to 968 M030 spec, brand new 968 M030 rears and 968 M030 anti roll bars.

AMD piggy back ECU.
