Default Trackday special and car for the missus / daily driver for £15k all-in?

Moving out of central london to Dorking area, which means missus will need to get her license and a car.

I am wanting a track car, and we won't have room for 3 cars, so I'm considering flogging the M5 and getting a track / weekend car for me (circa 10k) and then a daily driver to share with the missus.

I have the usual thoughts on the weekend car...Westie, Lotus Elise, 968 CS (erring towards a lightweight special ATM...) but no idea what to get for the daily driver.

Requirements are as follows:

5-6k-ish
Must not be dull as ditchwater
Must be fairly cheap to have a new driver on the insurance
Reliable
decent load carrying space / boot access, but not too big a car for a girly to manoevre
Possible towing capacity for the track car

Current thoughts are:

Unmolested classic scooby wagon (?insurance?)
MK4 Golf TDi
BMW 3-series touring
Audi A3 TS
Clio Sport 172
Cupra 1.8T

Any thoughts / comments?

leons are a good bet, probably best going for the diesel if you want to tow a trailer, good torque and you should get a decent one for 6k

would suggest a 330d but you would need more money, what m5 you sellin e39?

Yep E39, with a brand new engine fresh from BMW

Will be a shame to see it go, truly fantastic car, but with spring on the way I think the Caterfield will keep me amused.

Get a VAG and a revo SPS loader and you could have a missus map and a mister map

Based on the fact I spent a little more than that a while ago, the Audi seems to wear better than the others so at that money, it'll be a nicer example.

More for your money with a Ford Focus. Better handling too and easy to drive. If your missus hasn't passed her test yet then it's possible she'll put the odd dent, scrap the bumper parking etc. and the Ford will be much cheaper to fix than the others you've mentioned.

You're never going to get rid of that M5 so this is just idle fantasy.

Clio would be best bet.

Ed, I think you need to do a bit more research on towing weights and capacities, Caterfield plus trailer or 968 plus trailer. Not sure if some of those smaller cars are legally capable of towing such.

For fun drives, don't dismiss Fords.

From further thought last night, the 'weekend' car would also need to be occassionally used for the road, the other half came up with the example of what if she is away for a weekend with the car, so I'm now thinking back along the tin-top route a la 968, so trailer would be unneccesary.

Which model/year ford would be optimal based on a 5k budget (obviously if i can get cheaper that gives me more to spend on the toy..)

Are you sure you can handle a reduction in PTW having had an RS6 and An M5? If Caterfields are now out of the equation, then how about a VX220 turbo?

Golf TDI estate 130 bhp.
Useful size,yet not too big.
Good engine.

Should get one around the £6000 mark.

Haha, you know I did think about an estate version today, then snapped myself out of it quick sharp! Glad to hear it served you well

306 could be a better one, nice thought.

I have it feeling when I get the M5 back next week it might be hard to part me from it for a while
