Default FTO or MR2 turbo??

Selling my scooby and going for either a FTO gpx manual or a MR2 turbo. ive had a mr2 last year but it was a N/A engine was fun to drive but too slow. ive never driven the fto but just love the look of them and the insides look well. I know the mr2 is going to be a lot faster but not that fussed bout speed at this point.

Opinions from people that have owned or driven them would be great.

Finding it hard to choose between them.

Owned an FTO for 4+ years very reliable, 200bhp, flat torque curve from 1800rpm to 8300rpm and great sound with an ITG airfilter (even better than the scooby). Neutral handling and front wheel spin not really an issue unless v wet or snow.

If you do get one choose one go for black.

Yup FTO sounds mental when it switches to MIVEC, especially with Blitz induction.
I'd go for the MR2 though tbh, RWD is by far more fun than FWD.

The FTO always interested me (ie , what it's like to drive).

I had a 2.2vtec Prelude for 8 yrs. I would guess the engine characteristics would be similar ie not so hot low down but lots of fun when the Vtec/Mivec comes in. Any thoughts from FTO owners ?

Well, I had the same dilema a few years ago...

The MR2 won by quite a margin for me. Provided that you can live with a strictly 2 seat car and small boot, then there is no contest.

RWD loads of torque, and very tunable. A std turbo would be quicker than a WRX, and a mildly tuned one will see STi's off. Doesn't look out off date even if the first MK2 MR2s came out more than 15 years ago

The FTO looks good, and is more practical, but not as much fun. Good handling for a FWD, and not slow but not in the same league as the MR2 performance wise.

Depends what you're after...

ive had a fto gpx with full decat and induction and sold it after 3 months as the power bored the tears out of me literally, also the tappets on them always tend to rattle and on the gpx they are non hydraulic so they have to be adjusted by a professional , for them to start doing it again a few thousand miles later.
you'll find mondeos and focus's keeping up with you. very embarassing as it looks like it should be a proper sports car. also you cant get parts and when you can there very expensive £50 for an indicator stalk 2nd hand.
mr2 all the way, my friend has one and its a great car, or an rx7 if youve got the money, cheers rob

MR2 Turbo all the way mate.

I had one for 2 years a while ago, and it was :-

Reliable
Fun
Quick
RWD
T-Bar fun for the 2 days of sun we have

I would recommend one over any FTO.

But as people above have mentioned its not the most practical car, being a 2 seater, but if you can get round that then its some of the best fun per £££ you can have with your clothes on!!!! Miles of smiles!!!!

MR2T every time.

I've had 3 and they are great as long as the 2 seat thing is something you can live with. I found Toyota main dealer servicing to be mega expensive, too.

FTOs are sloooooow depsite the 200bhp. They feel more like 120bhp and IMO are looking very dated now. The sound nice, though.

MR2 all day long, had an import loved it to bits.
Would buy one tomorrow if I had the dosh.
Test drove a mivec was ok but nothing special.
Thought the interior was same old mitsi - cheap and plasticy !!
MR2 - different breed all together, quality cars for reasonable money.
If you can find a good breakers, the MR2 can be cheap as chips
to replace components / panels etc. MR2 all the way
Craig.
