More speakers - More volume?
Hi,
I've installed a new head unit into my car. For some reason the volume appears to be a lot lower on same volume than it was in my previous car. I'm finding that I have to really crank the volume up in order to receive a decent level of sound.
The new car has a 10 speaker system all of different sizes whereas the previous car only had 4. Would this be the reason why the volume is different?
Comments appreciated.

All kinds of factors can come into play. Dan might be right if there's lots of speakers wired in series. If so, the plus point is that the amp will be pushing less current at a given volume level, so you'l probablyl be able to turn it up louder without distorting/overheating
The sensitivity of the speakers can also vary a lot - two different 6 1/2" speakers in the same place can give different volumes when driven from the same header unit. Similarly, different mounting points for the same speakers can make a big difference.
If it's all working fine, goes loud enough and sounds nice, I shouldn't worry. If it doesn't go loud enough, get yourself a suitable amp, and use that to drive some or all of the 10 speakers.

thanks.
when you crank it up it still sounds fine. no distortion what so ever.
it seemed a bit odd because I don't recall having to increase the volume so much as I have in other cars but then again other car never had so many speakers.

Who wired the 10 speakers in ?
If you have changed the resistance make sure the unit amp is capacle of running at the new resistance if not the head unit will go bang. If the resistance is higher you will be OK but a number od amps will not be happy and 1 or 2 ohms.
