530D Possible turbo blown....help
big bang, loss of power and as you accelerate loads of black smoke out of the exhaust. If it is the turbo any idea on cost to replace, it's a 2000 530d.
Cheers

Sorry to hear that...I have a 525d sport, and I dread the turbo going!

Can happen due to a couple of things. When was the last time you checked the oil? Low oil can lead to turbo failure. The 3.0d engine can also suffer from inlet manifold failure which sucks in various bits of plastic and metal and destroys the turbo.
Either way you are looking at turbo + exhaust as a min. Worst case could be new engine if the pistons and valves have had a hard time. Turbo and exhuast are about 2k, labour will be about 1k. If it needs a new engine then the bill is going to be
A cheaper option would be to consider something like this

have you checked all the piping for the turbo to intercooler to inlet? might have popped off a pipe or have a split in one someware. worth a look. all the boost leaking out somehow before the inlet would give massive amounts of black smoke due to no air to burn the fuel. happened in the past to me in my old trusty 825 sdi

what rich said,
I had an intercooler pipe thingy come off and the same thing happened, bang then loads of black smoke and a loss of power, the RAC man put it back on for me and sent me on my way, but I had to get a new air mass sensor (i think) and a pipe had split by the turbo and it took three visits to audi to sort out
but at least it wasnt a big job!

I'll 3rd that: TBH at this stage, could be anything. Either way, with black smoke, your getting massive overfueling, which would suggest an air leak down stream of the turbo and airflow sensor. Again could be anything from a cracked inlet manifold, stone thats holed your intercooler, blown/split hose etc etc.
Bottom line: get it looked at

check pipes as the obvious one. We had a turbo go on a 2.9 330d we have at work. Was quite a big bill

Burt,
I had the same thing with one of my 330d's. It made a large bang and then started smoking and driving like an N/A diesel. Turned out to be the plastic inlet manifold that had cracked and the turbo was fine.
IIRC, you can purchase a brand new turbo for less than £600. Might cost a grand all in to fit and fix. The inlet manifold was £270 for the part only. Mine was fixed under warranty.
Cheers

Yep, i'd go with the plastic inlet manifold as well, check if its split on the side.
If it is the turbo, mine had one on a year ago at approx £1800
My 320cd did the same a fortnight ago, but the loss of power was accompanied by running on 2 cylinders - a flap had worked loose in the inlet manifold and fallen into the engine melting cylinders/pistons 2/3, and buggering the head and valves. Picking it back up at 3:30 today having had a brand new BMW engine fitted.
All under warranty thankfully, especially as it was on 90k miles and only had it 5 days.
