Geesta,
I have just sold my Gti to purchase my first scoob. I had a '52 plate. Great fun to drive on the country lanes and pretty good economy (28-30mpg). There are a few common things that can only be expected with French cars i.e poor plastics and rattley interiors but nothing major.
I don't know whether you'd have anything done at the main dealers but unfortunately in my personal experience they have always been awful so something to bear in mind. Parts are cheap though and a good independent will of seen loads of 206's by now!! Eurocarparts I found best for bits, and a site I have to highly recommend is www.206info.co.uk There's a good archive of information on there!!!
Enjoy!

Had a 206 XS 99 V PLate from new. It was an 8V 1.6 and was utter sh!te. At the time you only got 1 years warranty. And by that time the Driveshaft was already on it's last legs! Not trying to scare monger, as it may have just been my car. Have heard some stories regarding the 206, may be be worth popping over to www.parkers.co.uk for owners reviews. Seem to recall they weren't very favourable.

Yeh, there **** !!!!! Driving position is rubbish, not very fast, and handles like a whale (compared to the 106 GTI).
I had a 106 GTI & after 3 years of ownership was wanting a change. Had a go of a demonstrator 206 GTI, and in the 3 hours I had it, I couldn't find a comfortable driving position. It had too much body roll, and wasn't particularily quick in a straight line. Got back in my 106 GTI, and realised just how cr@p the 206 is.
Went for a Renault 172 instead. Wish I hadn't, but that's another story.
Sorry for the downer on your wifes new car, but just giving honest thoughts.

FWIW I've always like them, but never driven one...

Watch out for the seat runner/reclining mechanism breaking and exhaust manifold cracking noticable by a rattling noise when excelerating-both common faults.
If you've got to have a 206 go for the 180 version, this is what the Gti should have been like in the first place but unfortunately too little to late.
Both types eclipsed by the Clio 172/182 and CTR.

Also I thought the Fuel Consumption was pants. Basically fill the car up and 20 miles down the road you find the needle is down to 3/4 of a tank. Not as good as a 205.

And as for it being a good track car, who drives a car on a track? most of us only go to Tescos and back.
And the 20 miles of fuel consumption wasn't on a track. This was everyday driving on the roads, and yes I was caining it just to get to 60 mph (On a National Speed limit Road), but you had to due to the lack of performance the thing gave me. Possibly why the driveshaft was on it's last legs.

A few years ago, a friend sold his Teg Type R for a 206 GTI (G/F influence). He had three years of utter misery.
First week he had it; Met up with him on the way to a camping trip in North Wales, had to stop at the services to re-secure the spare tyre tray under the boot - a sign of things to come. He then had to endure a journey on the A5 endlessly playing catch-up (me in the scoob). I had tried to make a point about his futile purchase.
He then lost complete interest in cars and got married.
