Default Audi S4 2.7 bi turbo

Recently seen a 2000 (x) reg am interested in finding out more.

Has anyone owned one before?? Whats the car like??

Is it a massive hike in running cost??

What is everone opinion on them??

Also considering an Audi 2.4 Quattro on a 2002-2003 plate?

I have never owned one, but my mate at college had a MY00 A4 1.8t Quattro sport which was a lovely car. Slightly underpowered, but no slouch. 24-29 mpg, variable servicing lasted to 80k when he sold it for a MY05 A3 3.2 Quattro. A happy customer.

My other mate has a MY04 A4 1.8t Quattro S-Line. Much better car than the older shape, feels very solid and has a fantastic spec [although he paid £32k]. It is underpowered with 190hp – but looks the part on 18’s with all the S kit. [27k on the clock so far]

So overall my mates have had a pleasant experience of the A4 series – but with AWD and lots of weight IMO the S4 is a minimum requirement. At approx 140/150 WHP / tonne it puts a better angle of perspective on things. Insurance group 17 in the S series and no more than 25 mpg.

I will be getting one later this year, Seems to be the next step for a lot of Scoob owners.
Think running costs are similar, check for cambelt changes with waterpump inc, check turbos & manifolds for rattles, if Ok, then get it remapped for serious fun

Got one albeit a 99

Went to it from a UK Turbo with light mods.

Insurance - same
Fuel economy - roughly the same/slightly worse

Performance is -

Saloon 254bhp / Avant 265bhp - 300 lbft torque
Very potent.
Very Q-car

Downsides - not quite as urgent feeling as the Scoob (but could be percieved as smoother)
Some don't like the handling - find it a bit wooly. I haven't tbh.

Things to check out for

Cambelt and aux water pump - the water pump ideally should be replaced when the cambelt is changed (usually isn't though)
If it's got a concert 2 radio, check it hasn't got the "full volume" mod - when you turn it on, it can be on full volume This can be fixed for £60 (radio out job)
Check that the DIS (Drivers Information System) isn't fading, as it is a £600 replacement part

For more info, check out www.rs246.com

I've had mine for the last 2 months - I haven't regretted my change for one minute

Next is a Stage 1 upgrade (got the Avant) - 340Bhp & 400lbft + a Miltek back box

Hope this helps

Dan

thanks for the replys, i think that running cost will be similar to my scooby, in terms of servicing and petrol, cos lets face it there not great on that front.

But just dont know if i should think of parting with cash for one.

Have you driven one yet?

That's half the battle - it took me 3 months to find mine, and I had to travel 180 miles to see it

must add, serviceable parts tend to be a bit cheaper than Subaru, but the dealers are like Highway Robbers!! They charge a fortune!!

340 is a lot from a stage 1 upgrade...both saloons and Avants have 265 BHP as standard.

I've done 70K miles in mine (103K miles in total) and it's be quite good apart from boost leaks and turbos which they are prone to.

I have K04 turbos, 600cc injectors, Bosch motorsport fuelpump, full Milltek exhaust (downpipes, sports cats etc) and a custom remap from MRC. The car makes around the 410 BHP. The addition of RS4 intercoolers would see this up to 440 ish (hybrid turbos and FMIC is closer to 500 BHP).

The big issues with the car is that most garages don't understand them and boost leaks in the Throttle Body Boot, F pipes or leaks in the Diverter values aren't fixed nor are MAF failures picked up. All of these things shorten the life of the standard K03 turbos.....Turbo failure costs 2.5K minimum (2 turbos plus engine out).

Get any car your looking at checked out by a specialist S4 shop (QST, AmD, Dialynx, Star Performance or MRC) before parting with cash.

To give you an idea there is a test called a FATS test (American idea) which involves logging the engine parameters using VAG-Com and working out the time take to go from 4200 rpm to 6000 rpm in 3rd gear....the equivalent of 65 to 90 mph....standard S4 should do it in 7 secs (ish). A car in the same state of tune as mine will do it in 4 secs and there are a few S4 in the UK which have recorded 3.5 sec results.

Best ask questions on www.rs246.com

My mistake - 310bhp (just checked the MRC site) Maybe 315 with the Miltek.....

RS246 states different bhp figures for the the saloon vs avant Not going to take issue though, as I'm quite content with 265bhp. For the time being (whilst I save up anyway )

make sure the water pump is done at the same time - works out cheaper in the long run

Just bought one of these and there is a rattle from one of the turbos. This is particularly bad when the engine is cold.

The seller tells me that this is only the 'heat shield' that has come loose at one of its attachment points and that it does not affect the performance and, although annoying, does not need to be fixed. He is a friend of mine and made a substantial allowance on the sale price for this, but I am worried that I have made a costly mistake.

Does this sound like the truth?
If not - is this likely to be a turbo change job or can the shield be fixed?

If it turns out to be a turbo change job, then what are the likely costs?
It's going in for a timing belt change (at the seller's expense). I understand that this involves removing most of the front of the car. Would this be a good time to get it looked at?

If the turbos need changing I would consider an APR 2.7T Stage 3 Kit upgrade(GBP4,000), depending on the price difference from having the stock ones replaced. How much extra is my insurance co likely to want for a mod like this?

Hi there,

Firstly, get yourself over to MRC (Banbury IIRC) and geta health check.About £45. Sounds like a heat shield, and IMHO, I would get it fixed.

Secondly, get yourself over to rs246.com or audi-sport.net.........

Wealth of information, I've learnt alot of there (and from the likes of Jeff )< but they have MUCH more knowledge!!

Hope this helps, and enjoy the car
