'Ultimate' diesel - worth it?
I pick up my BMW 330d next week, and noticed that my local BP has two grades of diesel available - one pump simply labelled 'diesel' at around 96p/litre, and all the other pumps selling 'ultimate diesel' for about 103p/litre.
Does anyone have any idea what the difference is and whether the more expensive stuff is worth it?

I used some stuff in France last month which (if I translated correctly ) stated that it lasted x% longer. Certainly did a good job tricking my trip computer if it was just marketing hype. Can't remember which brand it was.

The Ultimate has higher cetane, which means better ignition properties, and supposedly a better detergent package.
The general feeling on the VAG boards is that it ain't worth the extra cash for the marginal (if any) benefit it gives.
Shell Diesel Extra is a high cetane diesel too, and it's priced the same as "ordinary" diesel. Shell is my nearest station so that's what I use.
I've used them all in my Passat 130 sport over the last 3 years and ......... no measureable difference from any of them against the stopwatch or in mpg.

Thanks guys - I've done some hunting around the net and I agree that the general feeling seems to be that it's better, but probably not worth the extra cost.
I guess I'll run on the regular stuff for a while, then see if there's an improvement switching to the higher grade once I'm used to the engine.

I use Ultimate Deisel in the Fabia vRS I run. Its is worth it for me, giving smoother running (compared to other fuels, it is still a diesel), more torque and less smoke. It takes a while for the benefit to show, at least 3 full tanks, but should you ever fill up with any other fuel you'll notice a difference immediately, for me its comparable to the difference between optimax and normal unleaded. My best mate also has a Fabia vRS and in roll on tests we were evenly matched, after he'd used Ultimate for a month and me using what was cheapest, he had the legs on my car, sounds daft, but he was pulling 1 car length between 40 and 90 mph, when before we had been dead level. Now we're back to being even with us both using Ulitmate.
As for the price, it depends on where you are obviously, I pay 4p/litre over the normal diesel and about 6-7p/litre above supermarket fuels for Ultimate, which means I spend at most £8.40 a month extra for Ultimate, based on my average use of 120 Litre per month.

I've noticed a difference between normal diesel and Shell's offering. In my Furby vRS a tank of Shell usually provides up to 50 more miles than normal diesel. I've not tried Ultimate in it yet, but that used to be good in my old Rover 420Di.
I usually get Shell as it's much cheaper... I know, a skin-flint

I must have tried every brand of diesel under the sun in my Chipped A4 Avant Sport PD130 (now 180Bhp ). The BP Ultimate does give slightly better range, 15-20 miles per tank, and provides smoother running (engine note not as harsh). However, performance wise I don't think there is much in it. IMHO it's not worth the usual 5p/L premium.
As has been said already, Shell Diesel is nearly as good as BP for a much more respectable price per litre.
How many have tried the "Millers Diesel Plus"? Is it REALLY any good for performance and economy? How much goes in the tank, how much does it cost and where do you buy from?
My A4 is on long life servicing (20k miles/2 Years) and is due it's next service soon. I'm hoping the oil and filter changes give the biggest performance, refinement and economy hike.

I defy anyone to prove that ultimate et al gives better mpg, cause it doesn’t.
I do 1000 miles every week. Have been doing the same journey same speed same everything now for over 18months. MPG is of max importance as i pay for the fuel. I have tried every type of fuel and it makes bugger all difference.
Same route, same 1000miles a week, 3 different cars in 18months, Golf TDI 55mpg, Nissan Di 44mpg and Pug HDI 62mpg regardless of fuel type.
Smoothness improvements?? Come on.
