Default Oh No! not another Diesel Thread

Yep,

I'm after a diesel, got £5k to spend, do around 600 miles per week, may increase to 1k.

Must haves - Size is important :-) as I will be doing mainly m-way journey and need the comfort, needs to be really comfortable but not wallowy.

Needs to return really good mpg 40+

Fairly low miles (sub 50k) so no 100K+ 525d's

4 Door, pref hatch rather than saloon but not too bothered.

Plenty of toys, cruise control, etc..

I was think of a Mondeo TDCi (130bhp) or a Vectra 2.0 DTi. Anything else out there for this sort of price?

VW passat tdi?
Look at a Pug 406 HDI or the laguna TD also, dont worry about high miles, ive driven one with 140k on and it went like stink (plus i own a 119k mile classic megane, great car!, except the head gasket.....)

Driven a Laguna and didn't like it, drove the Pasat and it was nice, I did feel the new Vectra chewed up the motor way mile with less effort and fatigue.

I'd go for the Mondeo, still comfortable but far better to drive than the Vectra or Passat.

Try and get a six speed as they are more refined for motorway work at 37.5mph/1000rpm.

Later Mondeo's also came with cruise control as standard even on the LX.

Cheers

I bought a 52 plate Mondeo TDCi with 90k on the clock for £2500, and it still drives like brand new, would recommend every time

I suspect this would be out of the price range, considering one of the requirements is low mileage.

I'd say your best bet is the Mondeo TDCI, depreciation will work in your favour for a relatively new car with low mileage, and in budget!

I like the thought of the mondeo, however I'm not sure if I can live with the interior. My current oil burner is a M reg Mondeo 1.8T and the interior is a class above the current models. I've nove covered 172k miles and it has been trouble free, engine is old now and looses speed uphills hence the change.

I am swaying towards the Passat 130 and may stretch to £7k.

A friend of mine has a year old Mondeo as a company car and I was quite impressed with the interior (but I am use to Subaru interiors! )

If you can stretch to the Passat, I think you will be very impressed! Another friend has a Passat as a company car and you're right the interior of the Passat is better IMHO.

Ideally I would like a 5 series BMW as they are just such a great all round car, had a 523 for a years motorway driving and it was superb, the built quality was on a different planet (much better than the newer 5 series imo).

5 series diesels are a bit expensive and I'm not sure if the 525 delivers good mpg. 520d would be too slow and 530d would drink too much.

I think the interior in the Mondeo is pretty good,
My ex girlfriends father was impressed with it too, and he owns a 3 series coupe and an X5 so it can't be too bad!

Better than the older mondeo's IMO

Lucky you! I bought a 2004 mundano tdci 130 zetec and its the most unreliable sack of $hit i've ever had the missfortune to set eyes on. Barely a week goes by where there's not something drops off or stops working!
