Default tuning a mk2 golf gti

Hi all
What is the most effective way of tuning a mk2 8v golf gti w/o engine transplant. It is totally standard at the moment.
Do these engines respond well to head work, for example?

Cheers
Nick

I had one with the usual bolt ons, made it a little quicker, they do respond to head work and the like but nowadays its a lot of money for small gains, I had a Mark 1 with a Gti Engineering conversion and it was quick but considering how much it must have cost to do, a bit of a waste of time.

Not sure if the usual GTi tuners are still going, i.e. GTI Engineering and the other fella, things have moved on, 2 litre 16 valve on throttle bodies would be the one I would go for nowadays, some go for the 1.8 T, tuned but I am not sure if that would suit the car, to much low down grunt when you really want noise and revs.

Thanks guys, much appeciated

The car was cheap and is a run-a-round. Thought that the expense might outweigh the gains so will probably concentrate on getting it running well to begin with and then see what cheap bits are available on forums and ebay.

It's good to be able to tinker around again with a car with the knowledge that if it goes wrong it isn't the end of the world. Since having the Scoob I've missed this side of car ownership.

Cheers

Just a suggestion - but stripping it out will make it faster if your prepared to live without the interior. Mate has a GTi Mk2 8 valve version with bolt on's and stripped out - much faster than standard.

If this is the same lump as in the Mk1 which i believe it it if its 8 valve, a cam shaft will not cost too much and makes a big difference.

Agree with the stripping as well.

Straight through exhaust makes some serious noise

Check Big Boys Toys, do some cool VW stuff
