I had an old vRS which I thought was geat - once chipped (too slow and heavy otherwise). I changed my MY01 WRX for one in fact.

However, the new car is just too expensive! I'd rather pay the extra 2 grand for a Golf GTi which would have better residuals.

You could even get a Focus ST for the same money.

I'm sure that both the Skoda and the Ford will be available in the near future for around 15K brand new either through dealers offering decent discounts or import brokers.

I test drove a new vRS Octy at the weekend. Very nice, but not as fast as my remapped Mk 1 vRS (which is going for further tweaking on Saturday ). Will I get one? Proably, but not for a couple of years. I was particularly impressed by the build quality and by the greatly improved rear legroom.

I'm contemplating buying one myself, went to have a look at one yesterday and they're a good sized car for four adults, I did look at the Golf but contrary to your comment I found the Golf to be horrendous money!

For base spec then a £2k difference is about right but as soon as you put obligatory wheels and toys on the Golf gets really expensive. A 'full spec' Octavia is sub £20k, the Golf is £26k! Far too much money IMHO.

Back in 2001 I traded my '98 Impreza Turbo for a Seat Leon Cupra 20VT, in the hope of saving money. I went from 22 to 26mpg, saved £4.50 per month on insurance, and the 10K service was £1.00 less than that of a WRX. Big deal.

Bought a new WRX PPP 9 months later.

Think it depends on peoples different situation. Im saving 100 on an insurance premium, and £100 on tracker which i need for the insurance. Im hoping my fuel bills will be a lot lower. I'll let you know next month!
