Default 530xi vs 530xd

dad getting a new ride - new models (MY05), auto transmissions, same price... which one to get?

530xi = 258hp, 300Nm, 0-62 7.1sec
530xd = 231hp, 500Nm, 0-62 6.8sec

the new 231hp diesel has better 0-62 time and theres even greater difference while running, in-gear acceleration is nearly 2 seconds better on diesel version... not to mention fuel consumption so should he get the diesel? or should he not trust the numbers and pick the petrol?

NO OTHER CARS PLEASE!!! he doesnt want Audi or Merc or anything else, he wants to stick with beemer, so comment just on these two, thx... and no 535d, he wants AWD cuz of snow we get here in large quantities

Tell him to get the diesel. He won't regret it. Having said that, the new 3.0 six is fantastic, although I've only driven a 330i with it fitted. Not sure if the 5 would blunt the petrol too much.

Either car will be very nice.
