175 MPH, with what 240 bhp, fairly heavy ( inkow weight isnt such an issue for max speed but it all counts) and 4wd, I reckon its either been played with or the speedo isnt that accurate, 2wd 320 bhp 911's only just get to that speed.

Well- the book top speed on my V6 4Motion is 147mph and that has 204 bhp. My old Cally Turbo had the same power, but more torque and topped out at 154... so the 250bhp R32 could get to 160+ I reckon. That and the inaccuracy of the speedo would show that kind of speed....

Took about the right time to hit vmax too... just watched a replay of my sti doing 0-to 7k rpm in top around 175mph down a long hill and it does take forever for the last few mph... the sti does 24.5mph per 1000rpm, and my car was clocked at 140mph at elvington speed trap, and was reading 143 on the speedo and Rvit data readout so would have been fairly near...

"First off, since this is the internet, I take no official responsibility for the video just posted... nor do I admit it was me, in this public setting but I will use the terms 'me' and 'I' in a hypothetical manner, theoretically speaking , naturally .
First off, I dont believe this is and/or should be locked, as it is merely a thread for discussion on the maximum performance one may achieve out of their 2004 VW R32 without Forced Induction, nothing more.
anywho, 'I' know the dangers of driving 170 mph, in any location at night. 'I' have been on that section of pavement 1000 times, and know every crack and bump.. But 'I' dont want to make it sound like it was safe idea, as those are the only variables which 'I' know wont come into effect. Deer is the main issue, 5-0 being another, along with blown tires, etc. This was done with no other cars around, and when they were caught up to, normal speed was resumed, as to keep the dangers as close to minimal as possible. Also this is not done often, or ever since, or ever before. 'I' happened to have a camera man randomly in the car at 2 am on a long drive home that night.. Driving 110 on a Sunday afternoon is most likely just as dangerous.
Performance mods of the car in question, at the time of the event are as follows:
AEM intake
REVO software
H&R sport springs
Custom exhaust with X pipe and DMH Performance electric cut-out (between Cats and Resonator)
Eurosport rear strut tower bar
18x8 OZ SL's with Kumho Ecsta MX rubber"

As mentioned earlier - normally TC light on the dashboard normally means it's switched off. The speed is fairly accurate - if you watch the trip meter - he doing a 1/10th of a mile roughly every 2 secs, which equals a mile every 20 secs or 3 miles a min or roughly 180 mph - give or take, allowing for inaccuracies of the speedo. It could also be affected by having a larger wheels that could change the rolling radius, making the speedo less accurate. There must have been a few more mods to that car though - my RX8 with a few exhaust mods is pushing around 235bhp - it is lighter and more aerodynamic than the R32 and will do 150mph, so I'm not sure where he finds the extra 25 mph.
ESP works by reducing power to a wheel that is skidding, and also by lightly braking as well, so I reckon he turned it off to a) reduce any potential power loss due to it running, b) stop it potentially applying the brakes at a really inopportune moment.

Every other VAG car I know of puts the ASR or ESP light on when you press the button to turn the system off.
Even when you turn it off and get the light on the system re-arms itself when you switch the ignition off and back on.

It's default setting is on. If the button is pressed you disable it and illuminate the light on the dash.

normally with ESP on, the light is not lit, but if ESP activates the light will illuminate for the period ESP is doing its stuff, so in this case light showing, ESP is 'on' doing its stuff
when you press the ESP button you turn ESP off and the light on the dash permenantly illuminates.
So on the video he has ESP off.

As it only updates every 10 seconds and if he hasnt reset for a while would take a loing duration of different driving style to change it significantly.

Doesnt seem quite right to me. The moment he starts slowing down and the speedo indicates 140mph it pans up to the road and the traffic coming the other way. hes going 130-140 they must be going at least 30 mph, closing speed 160+. Does not look anything like that. He should fly past traffic coming the other way.
