Well went to Porche centre today had a look round the cars.

Have got it down to three choices.

Any opinions would be good. Bit of background... I enjoy driving on track however I'm not the greatest driver in the world, and I normally drive round safely, because of my age I can't afford to have another accident so I don't tend to give it my all on track. I love driving around Europe, and love German roads. I like noise, don't mind uncomfy seats and don't car about mpg. I also like to drive Europe in winter time, which means 4wd would be a bonus as I've been in snow before in an M3 and it was aweful! In the scoob is was fine, even on summer tyres.

So, my choices.

Option 1
911 TT
Coupe, 2002, on a 52 plate. Tiptronic. 33,000 miles, black with grey leather. All the toys, FSH, 1 owner. Drove it, lovely place to be, however the noise isn't there. It's like being in an M3 but with crazy amounts of power.


Option 2
911 C4S
Coupe, 2004, on a 04 plate. Tiptronic. 18,000 miles, blue with black leather. Sports Exhausts, all the toys, not sure about the colour but noise is lovely. But, is it enough power?


Option 3
M3 CSL
Keep the CSL? it's currently at 9.200 miles, over 10,000 some people shy away. Lovely noise, lovely power.


I spend more time on motorways than I do on track, so gut feeling is to go for the TT, but it really is a tricky one. C4S is newer, nicer cabin feel, lovely sound. But then I'd probably just want a TT!

Any advice gratefully received. Option 4 is to my a fiesta, but life is too short!

For track use I'd keep the CSL, but ironically I'd probably be faster in a 205 purely because of the fact I'm so damn worried about spanking the CSL

 

Dont get the c4s, the new boxster s is faster and the old boxster is not far off!

For me it would have to be the 996 turbo.

I have had my Porsche 986 for a year and out of all the Porsches I have driven the 996 turbo is the only one I would swap for the 986 at the moment.

I would have M3 CS in your position. Not AWD though - but buy a cheap Range Rover for winter.

It wasn't to bad really, but SMG is much much better. But for motorway not really a problem. I'm not a track day god like you guys

 

I'd say keep the CSL, but if you had to change get the Turbo and change the exhaust if you wanted more noise Don't they do them in manual ? Tiptronic pah!

 

I spoke to Posche, they are willing to put on a differant back box on the turbo if I went for it, not sure how much differance that would make

Keeping CSL is the wise man's choice though...

 

911 turbo just doesn't make the beautiful noises that the N/A does, shame. Keep the CSL, get some 'sensible' tyres for winter, and stick a block of wood under the accelerator, voila! Traction control in winter!

Tiptronic is the way to go if you do a lot of in-town driving, but out on the open road you'll probably miss the manual. I used to change from 6th to 4th in my manual when the motorway traffic opened up, now I find 5th is a much better choice and it doesn't feel like I'm thrashing it at all. You may find that you'll start changing down using the tip buttons when approaching roundabouts and junctions, it means you'll feel a little more involved - and you'll save the brakes!
The manual is also very easy to drive around town, first gear will take you to 40mph, but when moving off you'd swear it was geared much lower.

 

From feedback so far, keeping the CSL ssems to be the most popular option

 

Have you considered having the geometry set a little less aggressively? (Said after reading 'skittish' remark on Pistonheads)

Tried that, and road tyres. No differance.

To be fair the guy at BMW said 'They all do that mate', just takes some getting used to.

 

Do they even make a 997 turbs yet? the 996 turbo is a seriously fantastic motor for everyday use and it looks mint...however the csl is the daddy! looks amazing and just is a true driving machine! forget the c4s its a not in the same leaque as the 911 turbo or the CSL (i wasted a c4s in my p1 no sweat!). would be tempted to swap the CSL for the 996 turbo but why not have a bit more fun in the beemer and wait for the 997 turbs to hit the british roads. or buy a noble!! they are mutant! or even a new caterham csr!! they are similarly mutant!

p.s. do not buy a boxster...they are totally gay!

 

A mate of mine has got a C4 (not sure if it is the S or not) and after being in your CSL I would personally keep the BMW.

Although the turbo may be a different story!

What a lovely position to be in, being able to have the choice of such great cars!

 

Oops, yes I hate the numbers - 996 not 997. The 997 is not due till next year,,



So the Boxster is gay is it..... I used to think the same thing but once I had a drive in it I decided to get one. I keep a Caterham SLR in the garage for my hetrosexual driving.

Called the dealer back to say probably going to keep the CSL, and he got insperation and started hitting me with new numbers!! Shocking!

Looks like I now own a 911 TT

Taking it to Germany next week, so full report when I get back.
