Default £5k Interesting Car Suggestions

I'm probably gonna get shot of my R33 GTR before the insurance renewal in Oct and need to think of another daily driver.
It doesn't have to be fast (though pokey 7secs to 60 tops!).
I've already got a 205GTi 1.9 thats just for fun.

Had a 306GTi-6, 270bhp Uk Scoob, 400bhp Supra and 400bhp Skyline so I've been there done that.

Had enough of cars costing a fortune to run, service etc so looking for a trade off so to speak! Also had it with tying money into something that all it does it depreciate.

I initially thought of S4, M3 Evo etc (S4 more), but while not quite as expensive on servicing and ins as the GTR they aren't far off and so came down to thoughts of a 330i Sport, which you can currently pic up for around 12-13k.

So that got me thinking how about something similar but much cheaper!

Looking at 50-60k miles on the clock tops, £5k ish, not fussed on type of car, eg saloon/hatch etc. Don't want a VAG 1.8T As I said it needs to be pokey and interesting to drive but in a more luxo kind of way! Thoughts of a 1996ish E36 328i crossed my mind!

Any other suggestions you lot can throw may way so I know what cars to go and have a drive of when the weather perks up a bit?

Ta

A totally off-the wall choice would be an old E class merc - 300E 24V, 230BHP very comfy and very quick once mooving

This is what I was looking for last night as well. Some sort of runabout that costs about £5k. Can't get another WRX yet.

Am thinking something that is made 2000 or later with about 50-60k miles.
Maybe a Ford Focus? Golf, Polo, 3-series BMW??? To many to pick from...

All confused...

Aye!!

Don't really want a run of the mill golf/focus affair though, hence "interesting" LOL!

No such thing as a Beemer that's too big !

You can get a decent Civic vti 1.8 (5 door) for £3.5k.

A 5 series is only 12 inches longer and 3 inches wider than a 3 series!

Just picked up a Volvo S60 T5 for £5k.

0 to 60 in 6.5s, and 155mph if you dare.

250bhp as standard and 330Nm of torque - nice.

Corrado VR6 - might struggle with getting your required mileage, but 5k should buy you one with all the relevant high mileage (100K) work carried out (new chains, tensioners, head re-condition) etc.

I do like the Corrado, but could only be a Storm and they are getting tricky to get hold of, and yeah, mileage would be an issue!

Don't fancy a Volvo

200sx s14 - for under 5k you could get one with a/c, optional leather etc, decent performance that can also be tuned reliable (within reason) and that oh so rwd drifting chassis.

Jawa- just a quick question slightly off topic, what what was the quickest and most fun out of the 400bhp Supra or 400bhp GTR?....I'm torn between them for my next car.

You considered a MK2 MR2? Fanatastic cars, reliable, cheap to run and up to 45mpg if you want.

I miss mine a lot, great cars. You could get a P/R reg for about £5-6k

Sorry chaps - couldn't own a Volvo!

DW - mate has an MR2 Tubby, nice car, but he's got one and not really what I'm looking for!

It certainly looks like 328/330 etc is the way forward...........

When I drove both stock cars the Supra felt more special and I liked the auto box for commuting in. Straight line rolling start the Supra would probably *just* have more poke. Standing start the 4WD of the Skyline comes into play and would win.

In "quick" terms there is hardly anything in it between my old "BPU" supra and the "stage 1" GTR I have now, if anything the GTR feels a bit faster due to its power delivery and it just keeps getting stronger and stronger all the way through to 8k where the supra tails off around 6.

Most fun, well IMHO defo the GTR. Its the better drivers car out of the two, and more throwable, and will get you out of some brown trouser moments better than the Supra can.

As I say though, thats all MHO, and the only way you'll really know which you prefer is to drive both and see which appeals most.

Both do different things superbly well, both have been great to own

A bit, but as I said in the first post (though have now editted to make more sense!) I have the 205 if I want buckets of fun mate

Struggling to think of any cars that fit the bill of being a little interesting and pokey, while kinda luxo other than the likes of 328i's, 330i's S4's etc.

Theres the Accord and Integra Type R, but again haven't quite got that daily driver commuting luxo-ness the audi/bm have.

(can't believe I'm contemplating a BM hence the thread!! LOL!)

Hello mate

My Galant v6 2.5 Sport is a hoot, you can pick up a 2000 model with 60K for less than 5K

I am getting around 38-35MPG so far, it drives great, agile and fun to push hard.

around 190BHP 240lbs or torque it will not set the world on fire but easliy a match for a 328i.

Speak to ya soon i hope

Paul

Hey Paul

Don't mind the look of them - how about the 1996 Galant VR4 2.5 Twin Turbo instead of the sport though? (not much point getting rid of the Skyline if I got that though LMAO!)

I'm also fine tuning my search down to a BMW Coupe about 1998 or 99 318 or 328 as they are all about £5-6k.
