Talking Old honda prelude?

Does anyone have/used to have the old prelude? The boxy one with the pop up lights, that is.

Are they any good?
How long do the engines last etc....
Or will they be over the hill by now?

Just wondering, as they're quite cheap at the moment, and the thought of a Vtec is quite appealing. My justy just isn't quite hitting the point at the moment..... Gets me from a to b right enough, but it ain't what you'd call exciting

Ta!

Don't know much about the 3rd Gen. (pre 91) I had a JDM 94 VTEC (4th Gen) and it was fan ****ing tastic - Better handling but mut much less grip than the scoob.

Engines are bullet proof.

May be a little over the hill - u should be able to pick up a 4th gen VTEC for 1-2k these day though

I could stretch to that, I'm sure. I'd rather have something that's better overall, than a car that's about to fall apart...

Maybe the last of the 3rd Gen ones, although they are quite old now, just thinking about it.... My justy's a '92, and it's hardly in its first flush of youth. Prelude'd be better built though, I'd imagine?

my mrs still drives my '94 80k on the clock and it's in no way gonna fall apart. (yours for 2k )

Get one

Since I imported it in 98 It's broken down once (slave clutch cylinder <£200)

I needed to get the steering rack reconditioned £250

And it needs some new manifold seals >£100.

That's it.

In 60,000 miles

Build quality is excellent

A mate of mine used to have a 3rd gen, and it was put together very well!
Certainly better than my '97 Impreza....

He used it as a track car, and had quite a lot of engine work done - I seem to recall he had it pushing 190bhp.

Dont think they did a VTEC one though, you will have to go 4th gen for VTEC, or CRX, or Civic. Infact a CRX 16v will do the job nicely for you to

This is my old one, is that the type you mean ?

Engines last if treated to regular oil changes, need to be revved to make progress but they are ok generally.

Engines good for big miles if looked after, cambelts due at 60k intervals, oil at 6k. Sunroof can leak as they rust up there, and it piddles down your neck...

Handle ok in a stable understeery kinda way, but you can take liberties with em because of this of course.

Brakes very average, stick some good pads in at least.

Decent boot, comfy, airy interior, seats could do with more support at the sides but thats just me being picky.

I had two, first one was on 180k and still ran fine, second one went to the Ring and never came back

edit: I should add, theres two versions, its the 4ws EX 2.0 - 16 (valve) that you want, the lower one is pap. No vtec engines ever fitted to these by the factory either, thats the later Gen models. Which are also silly cheap now btw and a better car altogether.

Talking

Aye that's the one.
How quick are they, just out of interest?

I should perhaps try and find one to have a look at anyway, but maybe the next edition would be a better bet?....

About 8 secs to 60, 130 ish top end, fairly quick for its age and can hang onto some more modern cars if you're prepared to cane it

The Gen4 Vtec ones are cheap now tho, and they are really quick- like Integra TypeR quick ( in a straight line at least)... well worth a look as vtec motors tend to be stronger anyway.

I sold a 3rd Gen last year - 280,000 miles and ran as sweet as anything still. Pretty nippy and a bit of a bargain seeing as they're onlya few hundred quid these days.
