Red face Considering a 2nd car..

Have been toying with the idea of getting an "old banger" to do the commute to work. The legacy can handle it, and I have no worries about leaving it parked as no-one knows what it is - but the petrol costs can be a little high!

Always wanted a Mk2 Golf GTi, and having read comments on here thought I'd check out a few prices. The cars on Autotrader seem pretty reasonable (if you look around) but then checked out insurance...

Firstly, alarm/immobiliser... The legacy doesn't need one, but a 600 squid, 13 year old 8v GTi does!!?? Hmmmm

Secondly, Fully comp, 5 years NCB, 31 years old... £550+, or about as much as I'd pay for the car in the 1st place!

Anyone else found these kind of problems?

Yup its a bit of a killer
The worst thing i found was how much a high risk post code stacked up against you (one was an extra 70% of the premium on tpft )
Ended up with a mondeo for my runabout (1.8lx)
Now progressed to a 2ltr Pug 306 sedan (quicker than the mondeo and more economical!!)
Hill house hammond gave me a couple of years ncb as i had the scoob (im with L&V for the scoob), but you could see what your insurance co on the subaru can do for you and your second car (you may get some cash off the legacy )

Hi mate

you can get a half decent Golf Gti for between 500-1000 mark so why would you want fully comp anyway get TPFT and just be a bit careful.
a friend picked one up once for 350 quid and although cosmetically it was a little tired it drove great.

How much do you want to spend on an old banger?????

Once you build up the NCB it gets cheaper and think of the fuel savings so it should pay for itself.

I ended up with a Charade GTti and ended up driving it our of preference over the Scoob. Some of those older hot hatches make you realise how much fun they can be.
