Default New Astra VXR

Anyone know where I can find out more info on this new car, as featured in this weeks Autocar?
Went into my local main agent today and they knew absolutely nothing.

Yep, that's the one.
It looks a great car, and if as Autocar predict Vauxhall can launch it for <£20k I think it's going to raise a few eyebrows in the hot hatch market.
Very tempted to dash over to Paris and sneak a look.

Who cares, if it goes as well as it looks, plus the pedigree of the Lotus involvement, a Vauxhall badge won't bother me.

The 'Ford' badge didn't stop them making a great car with the RS

Yeah come on guys give Vauxhall a chance, after years of being described as dull and bland the lst 2 years have given us the VX220, VX220 T, Monaro and now this. No one can accuse them of not trying. What did Subaru make that was in any way desirable before they started fitting turbo chargers and bonnet scoops!!!

Only difference might be the build quality is better on the Vauxhalls

Electronic chassis control.

When will anyone ever design a proper chassis, rather than using a crap one and then tweaking it with electrics?

why do manufacturers insist on making powerful fwd cars - they're crap, that's why they have to put those electronics on them just to make them vaguely driveable. as stated, why don't they just design a chassis that can cope in the 1st place?

THREAD BUMPED FROM LAST YEAR

The VXR will crack 152mph and hit the 60mph benchmark in just 6.2 sec; that beats the Golf GTI by a whole second.

Indeed - thats because it already has a decent chassis, the electrics just extend that further, hence why its the animal it is

iirc it brakes the front wheels separately as traction control when one starts to spin/understeer, which will obviously send power to the other wheel when you have an open diff.

you don't get any of the disadvantages of LSDs then (cf. Focus RS?), but on the other hand it is still kinda ****e.

They did the VXR220 yes

VXR220 - 220bhp 300NM Torque - 0-60 4.2
VX220 - 200bhp 250NM Torque - 0-60 4.7

Exactly the same engine - just a slightly different map is all that seperates the 2 cars.

why don't someone just go on the Vauxhall website for the info?

240ps (237bhp)
236lb/ft torque

18" wheels as standard.
£500 for 19's

Brakes are 321mm at front - but single pot sliding caliper though.

£18995 RRP

Options list is interesting and u could easily spec it up to £21k

They are taking orders now for delivery in Sept 05.

4 colours available...Red is standard the others u have to pay more for it seems.

Seats are indeed Recaros.

It looks fantastic I have to say and can't wait to have a test drive.

Lotus developed the handling side of things and has done brilliantly apparently.

I think Vauxhall are making a good crack of it with the VXR range. I think people seem to forget that Vauxhall does have some sporting hertiage.

They have been very succesful in the British Touring Car Championship from when John Cleland was still driving the Cavalier!

They are still competative in the DTM series in Germany racing against Mercs and Audi's.

They have had successes in there classes in Rallying with the Astra, Nova and Corsa.

And not forgetting that the main donor of the all conquering Lotus Carlton was a Vauxhall.

The Astra VXR will give the Megane, Golf and the up coming Focus a good run for the money, and may even become the best car in class. Plus I think it looks much better than anything else in it's class.

SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC:

Anyone driven a Cavalier recently. Although they feel old etc etc, they feel so light and chuckable - it is nice to see an early mk3 SRI i think it is - it captures the 90's nicely i think without look compleatly trashy.

I think if you bought a nice low millage mint example it may one day soon be considered a bit of a cult [perhaps not quite] classic ??

BACK ON TOPIC:

Looks a monster - i will await the Top Gear report !

hmm VX220 developed with Lotus in terms of chassis and general alround sports car approach, Monaro is actually a Holden, same stable yard but far removed from being a Vauxhall

Cheers

Oh dear....EVO Mag has only given it 3.5 stars. "Not quite sorted" was the verdict so they still love the Golf GTI.

Focus RS owner who drove it (he lent them his RS to compare) said its "all over the place on the bumps/brakes and bloody scary"

I was actually quite surprised with the VXR review on topgear last sunday.

For a lotus tuned chassis set up on the nurburgring it didn't do that well around the test track!

It came in at 1:33 where as the CTR (197hp) and LCR (222hp) came in quicker at 1:32.8 and 1:32.9 respectively. Nothing in it of course but i was expecting it to go round a lot quicker!
