2nd Cars
What do you lot drive when your not in the Scoob?
I need a small car to comute quite a way in thats cheap to run/insure etc.
It must have a little street cred
It must be cheap
It must be fun and great to chuck around
So far the Saxo and 106 have caught my eye but I have driven neither.
Any suggestions?

Beetle Cabriolet when she lets me (bit embarrassing though - really is a girls car) and the VTR1000 when I can be arsed to drag it out
Can't believe that the Scoob Wagon is the family car - the Beetle is useless, boot like a shoebox lol

I've got a 306 S16 which has been lowered and decated - and it's absolutley awesome fun to drive - feels like it handles better than the P1 - although looks a bit Max Power and I feel about 17 when I drive it, but for the price and the fun - it can't get a great deal better? (the 106 GTIs or XSI's are pretty good I hear).
I looked around for ages for a cheap, sensible, but fun second car - and even looked at (uch) diesels... Think if I'd about 5K for the second car I'd have gone for a good VR6 Golf with aircon etc - although for that little bit extra you're into decent Corrado VR6 territory - but then again for that sort of cash you can get a Pulsar GTI-R or imported Scooby - hence I found it very difficult to be sensible!
Would also love to own a Renault 5 GT Turbo - they look ultimate Chav, and always blew up as they got too hot - and the early ones were a bit crp as when you switched them off the oil pump stopped feeding the turbo before it stopped spining - but all this adds to its charm and they are cool. They've also got to be pretty cheap by now if you can find one that hasnt been Max Powered thrashed to death!
Other semi-sensible suggestion could be an old school 325i BMW - pretty cheap (even if you fix the stuff which might be wrong with them...) and are pretty cool - not sure on fuel costs though. 106 GTI/XSI is a good bet for cheap small and fun I reckon.
Let us know what you go for.

Ford KA? Ok, no cred but it is cheap, pretty basic (not much to go wrong), and is fine on the motorway (I kept one at 80 for 100 miles with no complaint) and are great to drive, just keep your foot to the floor and sling it round corners!!

Mk2 Golf GTI maybe? Pretty classless, still stylish, and doesn't come with a dodgy image (provided it hasn't been badly modified). 8v is cheap-ish to insure, bags of fun, and I can easily squeeze 400 miles out of a tank of unleaded.
Still a few low-ish mileage standard cars out there too.

I've got a VW Lupo GTI as a second car, looks cooler and is rarer than a Saxo or 106, is easy to park, has really good build quality, makes 38mpg,does 0-60 in 7.7secs, is an insurance group 11 and has a 6 speed gearbox which is one of the best gearboxes I've ever driven! 10 grand will get you a 2 year old one with a/c etcetc! Seen earlier ones(Y reg) as low as 7.5K!
Mines is tuned quite a bit but the best thing about them is the look on Johnny BMWs face when you go flying past him off a roundabout!

Whats the point in buying a modern car like an Impreza and buying a 2nd car as well?
Surely you would rather drive the Impreza?
I doubt there is any saving to doing it either.
Dave - Just interested.

I have had a number of cars which I have sold due to being poor compared to my scoob. Also don't do that many miles in the second car (less than 6k).
Year to date I have had;
2000 VW Lupo 1.7SDi supposedly 60-78mpg, yeah right best I got 55mpg.
Traded that in for a 1996 BMW 525i SE Touring which I found boring and sold after 6 weeks! Ulitimate drivers car I don't think so.
Then got a 1996 VW Golf TDi Estate not a bad car for £1500.
I then came upon a 1987 ur quattro. The guy selling it took my golf as part ex.
So my two cars at the moment are,
2003 Impreza WRX STi,
1987 ur quattro (with calssic insurance the insurance is same as Lupo!!)
Damian.

If it involves taking the hounds anywhere, then I use my Landy. Otherwise, I rack up some miles on madam's Z4 which is particularly handy with the weather as it is.

When not using then Impreza, we're either driving our Legacy Turbo, or our Nissan 200SX.
Ooops, three turbo-nutter-mobiles... Who signed off that one??!??
PS - After a couple of hundred quid, our S13 200SX is now faster than our Impreza!!! ('til it goes bang, probably )

I have a 2001 Zetec-S Fiesta (in blue of course!). Quite a bit of go for a Fiesta, w00ps VTRs all day long, and nimble as hell! No matter how hard i drive it it costs same to run as my scoob does pootling off boost. Small Services are less than £100. Only downside is being 1.6 it eats front tyres (7k miles if i'm lucky!!!)

Yes, they're a bit flimsy, but they are a 1.4 (cheap tax) and are cheap to buy. £1000 would buy the best there is).
The handling is just like a go kart, and the throttle response is stunning.
So much fun, I still miss mine.
They are reliable in a French way. They don't break down often, but you may get minor niggles. (Mine had 140,000 miles when I sold it, and I had a base spec 1.0 before that with 160,000 miles on it)
Go drive one. You won't regret it

Snap BedHog - gay Bug Cabriolet, in a gay blue, with gay 17" alloys and a gay boot. Also has gay parking sensors and gay fog lights.
However, the standard stereo with 6CD player is not gay and much nicer than my gay ICE in the STIMY03.

Thanks all some great ideas - even if some are a bit above my price range.
I am gonna be comuting from Bournemouth to Swindon soon and the Impreza will cost too much to run up and down. Plus the mrs will need the Scoob for taking the sprog round in etc. so a small second car is ideal for me to bomb about in and not cost the earth
I was told to try the AX by a mate today actually - so thats another for my list

I've got a focus 1.6 for the boring stuff and a sti 5 type r for the weekends.
Only problem? The bl00dy indicators! Or windowcators as I've started to call them. Every time I go from one car to the other I hit the window wipers when looking for the indicators and vice versa.
Muppet eh?
