Default M5's around the 20k mark.......

"newer" M5's below the 20K mark, and lower mileage just over that......

Those of you with 20K to burn may want to consider one of these....what a motor for the money...

List price was £60k in 2000, but IIRC, if you ticked every box on the M5's options list, you could add another £32k and there aren't many M5's that aren't fully loaded!

Bargain!

looked at M5's when i spent 25k on a 540 last year.

in the ned i was put off by the lack of an auto but the other big problem was that at 25K (and im sure 20k now) you were well outside warranty.

my 540 had thousands spent on it by BMW and i think an M5 would be even worse (if it needed work)

the trouble with a 50-70k car is that the money has been spent on stuff...LOTS of stuff. As such there are lots to go wrong. Mine had probs with sat nav, air con, heated seats, park radar, etc, etc

i loved it as i would get a free car from BMW while they fixed mine and cleaned it....i wouldnt want to have picked up the bills though!

Yeah, must admit I'm tempted but it would have to be still within BMW warranty and renewable.

Cheers,

Phil

The list price of a M5 was not 60K unloaded....! Mine is a 2001 'Y' with nearly every option cost 61K new. I brought it from a dealer when it was 23 months old for 34K and after 14 months of ownership it is at best worth 26K....!

I will say that it is the best car I have ever owned, it does everything superbly, cruises like a limo and on a track it will show a lot of Impreza's/EVO's a thing or 2!

IMHO a 20K M5 is excellent value for money!

Yes it was.....

What Car Valuation

Parkers Price Guide

The original list price was £60k for a year 2000 M5, and thats before you indulged in the options list.

Nappa leather? £5000

Sat Nav? £2000

The list goes on.

BTW, When have you EVER seen a BMW with options included in the list price? LOL

The list price is for a bare bones, completely basic Beemer. To make it into a decent spec car, the options list needs to take a hammering, as most examples have.

higher spec ones get more stuff as standard. So you get more as standard in a 540 than you do in a 520. Plus there are often special's which are not built to order

Well, by definition of 'options', if they were included in the list price then they wouldn't be 'options' would they

Actually, now I think about it, plenty of cars come with "no cost options"!

Included in the list price but optional as to whether you want it or not!

I do apologise, I didn't realise that when they gave the car the facelift they also dropped the price by 8K....!! Makes them even more of a bargin.

I remember when BMW's didn't even come with a stereo!

So, Tiggs, are you telling me that your Beemer is about as reliable as your Chimp?

"you were well outside warranty"

You can extend the BMW warrenty for x amount per year (E36 M3 was ~£400), if you get a car where this has been done you can carry on extending it forever more

I really want a E39 M5.

I had a 98R 540i, until it got stolen in June 2002.

It was, without a doubt, the best car I have ever owned.

It was a manual, which was fun (6 speed) but not ideal tbh, and it was in Imola red, I'd have preferred something a little more discreet.

If I was in the position to do so I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, although it would have to be still under warranty so i could renew. I think my 540 was costing 450ish a year to extend, which i considered excellent value for money considering what could go wrong and the associated costs would make the car otherwise prohibitive cost wise.

BMW broke its toys and BMW fixed them....TVR didnt start and TVR said "they all do that" spot the difference!

£600 for 12 months warranty on the 540 so expect more on the M5.

look out for comms packs......the only real "must have" extra (all the V8's came with most toys anyway)

So why is there a potential £32k of goodies on the options list?

Extended warranty is £620 a year on all E39's I think.

A lot of money, especially considering you have to continue BMW servicing, but worth it for something like this.
