400bhp Evo 8 Mooted
Tempting.... Very tempting....
From 4Car website.
Mitsubishi's UK importers want to offer "a monster Evo" to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mitsubishi brand in Britain - and a 400bhp Evo VIII is on the way. Just 30 examples will be made, to be priced between £40,000 and £45,000 though final specification has not yet been decided and they have not been formally cleared for production. Mitsubishi is, however, short-cutting the lengthy European Type-Approval and homologation processes by offering the models as Evo FQ 320 versions with aftermarket upgrades. They will be modified after registration, receiving a different turbo, exhaust manifold, ECU, stronger con rods and pistons, different fuel injectors, a larger intercooler and upgraded brakes, clutch and flywheel. All will be painted in gunmetal grey, and will not be called FQ 400 - and "definitely not VFQ 400", according to a Mitsubishi spokesman. The final name has not yet been decided, but it will probably be a reference to the 30th birthday of the Colt Car Company.
But will there be a hotter Evo yet? Where can the continual upgrades end? "We know of a 900bhp Evo but it's completely unreliable," said our Mitsubishi man. "Reliability is an issue, and price. We have to keep it affordable for Evo fans. We could do 450bhp but the costs escalate horrendously. 400 is as high as we'll go right now - it's more than enough and it has to be usable." All 30 of these anniversary models will come fully warranted by Mitsubishi with the same manufacturer-backed guarantee as a standard model. They are expected to go on sale in September.
