Mark 2 golf GTI question. Urgent help needed please
#1
Hi All
Some of you may know that my Fiancees golf gti 16 valve mark 2 was written off just before Christmas Her car was a black 1990 spec big bumper 3 door and was in good condition (can anyone host a picture please?)
Her insurance have only offered £1200 though and there just aren't any about for sale around here especially for that money
What do you think I should ask for? The car had 120,000 miles and full VW history and was all original with no mods.
Next up hopefully is a VR6
Thanks in advance
Paul

That does seem a bit low if it was a tidy one. I'd push for £1600 and see what they say. Parkers valuation site now expect you to pay so couldn't get a figure off there... and Glass' dont go back that far!

Hi Max
Parkers is where they got their price from not the "real" world of what you can actually buy. On an autotrader search I could only find one the same as hers but it had horrible 5 spokes instead of the BBS wheels she has and that's up for £2000

Always reject the 1st offer! Ins companies always give a low offer 1st time round.
Search on autotrader etc. for similar cars. Check other price sources etc.

Have seen 1990/1991 16v's with that kind of mileage for circa £1500 recently.
There is a big jump on prices to the lower mileage cars tho.

Yeah mate - never take the first offer.
And if you can provide them with real life examples of what it would cost you to replace it with another of same spec that helps too.....

You might push them up to £1500 'ish' but I think that might be your lot.
My last 16v was white, less history, 125k, standard condition i.e not mint but clean & honest & despite adverts all over the place I only managed to get £550 for it. So the bargains are out there if you sniff them out.
However to try & pump up the payout a bit I would get a wodge of VW mags & scan through the adverts in the back, as there are always some artificially high prices in there (esp if you can find a few cars same miles as yours but in oak green- people ask up to £3k for them) then send those ads off to the insurance as evidence of your cars value.

I sold my one owner Mk2 8 vavle for 1100 with full MOT long tax, CD changer, there doesnt seem to be a huge price difference, the main price decider seems to be the 3/5 door issue with 3 doors (like mine) being dearer as the 5 doors dont really look as good and are a bit wobbly as they get older, got offered a scruffy 5 door H reg the other day, Black leather but needed work for 550, turned it down as it would need 800 spending on it and a lot of time.

The best thing you can do is search the web for similar examples for sale, or at least the closest match you can get. Print off all the details, and when you reject the offer, send all the printed details in as documentary evidence of the actual prices for her car. Tell them these are the prices you'll have to pay to replace the car, and ask them to reconsider.
Remember also you should be looking for a payout that will enable you to go out to a dealer and buy a similar car, so you want to be looking for more than the average private sale price. You might need to keep pushing, but if the prices are that high, and I suspect they will be for a Golf, you should be entitled to a higher payout.
Just to back yourself up, have a look at the replacement value they are supposed to offer in this scenario, it should be in the small print of the terms and conditions of your policy.

Last night they upped their offer to £1600 so I'm nearly happy with that I'm just pushing for £200 more now. They tried giving me a load of b0llocks yesterday about if she had sold it etc but the car wasn't up for sale and never was going to be She was going to keep it until it rotted away.
Thanks for your advice.
