Hi all,

Im currently using my scoob for sprints, it pretty competitive, but next to an FQ300 evo and a 911 Turbo its harder to compete(having said that I beat a Noble M12 yesterday )

Eitherway, taking my 15k scoob round a circuit is a risk, and I cant afford to smash it up.

So Im considering getting a car for a cheaper category name either upto 1.4 road car or up to 1.8 road car (no turbos).

Have so far thought Integra Type R would be competitive as would 106 Rallye(1.3) AX GT or 205 rallye (1.4) and Suzuki Swift.

All bar the integra are pretty cheap, though I can get a teg for less than 7k.

Any other suggestions please folks

a well driven integra or elise would be quicker Im affraid!

 

AX GT with VTS engine, and if ££ allows supercharge it, easy 250bhp++ and its reliable at that point, push it past 270 and you'll have problems

Strip it out, have a fiddle with the engine and itll go like stink. Handle very very well and the steering feel is one of the best people say.

If you have the cash you can turbo it as well, but imho you could get throttle bodies a lot cheaper (tbs about 1700 then ad fitting, low boost turbo fitted is 4k, high boost is 7k. Low boost gives ~220bhp, high boost 300+).

Actually for 7k I know where you could get Menus old 19 touring car ) Nice power and quick car, did ok apparently.

If you want something cheap and pretty reliable, how about a Rover Metro GTi? The MPi 1.4 16v twin cam K-series is pretty swift, taking it to 120mph and 0-60 in 8.3 seconds. Very cheap and good fun

Find yourself a Civic VTI either 1.6 (158BHP) or 1.8 (170BHP), strip it outand Bob's your uncle. 1.6 thje one to go for IMHO
Suspension and engine mods easy. Bulletproof engine.

If you're allowed to do an engine transplant then why not a mini with Honda VTEC engine for maximum power to weight? This thing laps the ring faster than M5s and Porsches....

Otherwise I'd try an AX 1.0 litre, these are some of the lightest cars around with kerb weight only 630ish and when stripped out possibly just under 500kg? The GT is heavier, but as you're only concerned about power to weight and not body flex for handling I'd take a 1.0 and put in a heavily revised PSA 1.4 in. Could get a PWR of over 300bhp/tonne with the right engine, and that's more than your impreza already.

Alternatively, there are loads of mods available to get silly power out of a 1.4 K-series (as it's used in so many racing series).

 

Bro has a 1996 Civic 1.6 Vti, really isn't far off a teg, and cost him just over 3k. 170bhp.

 

My megabusa goes quite well for a 1.3

Lotus Elan twin cam (70's). Pretty fast for a 1.6 and great handler. Can be had for around £3-4K.

 

Some of you are missing the point, and I doubt engine transplants are allowable for the road car class.

A 1.5 or 1.6 is no use as far as the classes go.

My money would be on 1.8 teg (can be had for less than £7k) or for the 1.4 class you'd be looking at AX GT or a Nova 1.4.

Take as much as you can out the Nova, get rid of all the underseal, etc, stick a mental race cam and a pair of DCOE 40/45's in it with a trick exhaust (or individual throttle bodies if funds allow) upgrade springs/shocks, add anti roll bars, and super sticky Yoko's with machined struts for a good dose of neg camber at the front and you're laughing

Why is a 1.6 civic VTI not any good?
Aa 1.6 that revs to 8600rpm and produces 158BHP as standard will see off all if not most stock 1.6-1.8 n/a cars no bother whatsoever. Quick, light car with a bulletproof engine. Chances are the Max Power brigade have not already buggered it or bent it before hand and cheap to boot.

Cheaper than a 'teg and almost as good.

 

What about a late model Metro Gti , great engine , great chassis and suspension CCC & Dave walker really rate it as a track car + they are dirt cheap to buy

Paul, its not that its no good, cos its a cracking little car, but for sprinting a tuned n/a 1.8 has more scope (if its the right one) simply due to swept volume.

I used to be quite heavily involved (although not competing) in the Scottish sprint/hillclimb/race scene.

100 bhp per litre was pretty much the excepted standard for the "road car classes".

To get much more power and importantly torque from a civic vti without any forced inducion costs ££££££'s.

Those who did well, and the good engine builders concentrated as much on torque as power on the basis that 20lbft was worth more on the road than 20bhp.

when the classes changed from 1.3 and 1.6 to 1.4 and 1.8 those who upgraded to the max allowable capacity performed better than those who stuck with the smaller engines.

The 1.4's (as an example) didn't produce any more power than the 1.3's but had more torque.

Having said that, getting more from an Integra 1.8 will be pricey. But shell and basic suspension layout and components are right to start with.

Probably have to go for something old like an mk1 fiesta xr2 (don't know their engine cc tho) They'll be lightweight and have an engine that has been done to death, so tuning it should be easy.
