Steve -

Just noticed this thread has kicked off again...

Anyway, I've now sold the 306 Rallye and I got a brand new Clio Cup 3 weeks ago, so I've just checked the "theory" figures for my new motor!

Renault Clio Sport Cup:

Power - 170bhp (172bhp?! Evo again...)
Weight - 1011kg
Power/weight - 171bhp/tonne
0-60 - 6.62secs
0-100 - 18.17secs
60-100 - 11.55secs
1/4 Mile - 15.05secs @ 91.47mph

Now when Evo tested the Cup...

0-60 - 6.5secs
0-100 - 17.7secs
60-100 - n/a
1/4 Mile - 15.2secs @ 94mph

Will be going to Santa Pod in it this weekend to see what I can get!

FREET - I can't do the go kart because its a similar type to bike performance or low bhp but extremely low weight. It comes up with:
Go Kart 130 170 777 3.23 9.02 5.79 11.70 @ 114.45
...which i'm not happy about. I'm thinking of producing another formular for such vehicles and bikes.

Re the Bugatti, my formula wasn't really designed for such an exteeme car (!) in mind, but here goes anyway:

Bugatti 1000 1500 677 2.67 4.28 1.61 10.27 @ 155.66

155mph in just 10.27secs (!) sounds very similar to the Skyline that posted the fastest time at totb last week (9.95secs!)

I've already played around with the likes of very very high powerfull Skylines but the formula was set up for a very high chance of wheel spin when you get to silly bhp per tons so the times are somewhat out.

I don't know if any of you can remember but a few months back I posted a list of my THEORY figures for many cars from my spreadsheet, using my FORMULAS to calculate their times.

Anyway, I have an update, as well as 0-60, I can now calculate their terminal speeds for the 1/4mile, and finally I've worked a 0-100 formula in with it too, which a few people asked for. So also see the "through 60-100" which is always a decent figure to compare cars once moving.

Overall, it quotes a CALCULATED: BHP/TON,0-60mph 0-100mph, "through 60-100" and 1/4mile with its terminal speed.

Its formula is setup for only 3 items of easy available data:
1)BHP 2)Weight in kg 3)Drive Type

Figures are for full maximum abuse on DRAG/Excellent Road surface conditions. Based on standard road tyres, the BHP is flywheel, and weight is without driver (this has been allowed in the formulas):

The formulas seem to work well on most normal road cars, bearing in mind they do not allow for aerodynamics, gearing or Torque!

Before anyone says there's already programs out there that can calculate such times, yes there are, but I set out to do this with very basic and easy accessible data, alot of complicated programs need cd values, gearing, torque, tyres friction, grip, physics etc etc. The whole point is that I can use my spreadsheet to compare cars and increase their bhp to see the effects. I can see how some people's estimates in mags are way out, and which are realstic, all with basic data. The same goes for up and coming previews on cars where there are no road tests and other data are available.

(btw, the times are the very best you can acheive with full abuse on a grippy drag srip, I would guess personal acheivements could be slower by 0.5 secs in many cases)

Anyway, i'll post some samples from my excel spreadsheet, they might be a bit hard on the eye though...........

What do you think?
If i've missed your car and your interested then let me know just the bhp, kg and drivetype and I'll calculate it for you, or if you want to know what more bhp does.

Peugeot 306 Rallye 2.0 167 1199 142 7.70 22.18 14.48 16.14 @ 85.72

I see you've used Evo for the info...

A Rallye weighs 1163kg and the 1/4 mile time is definateley faster than that, plus I have slips to prove it!

your figs -

0-60 6.62
0-100 17.41
60-100 10.79
1/4 mile 15@93.29

car mag results

6.0
14.5

14.5@100

so for my car noway near, so must be a few more wrong ones, is there a way you could add in torque/gearing?

OK, this is what I need to know, I have to rely on kg from mags, so if they are incorrect they it provide different figures.

I'll amend the Rallye data, afterall I do own a 306 Gti-6 (and 300bhp Gti-R)so want its data correct!

Here's the info:

Peugeot 306 Rallye 2.0 99 167 1163 146 7.51 21.44 13.93 15.94 @ 86.67

Renault Cio Williams 93 163.5 985 169 6.69 18.50 11.81 15.12 @ 90.87

I was waiting for someone to comment on the Fiat Coupe!....i've actually been using that as a demo car for the formulars becuase I know their aerodynamics are good above 60mph and new it was out!

I'm working on aerodynamic formulas where I can increase the terminal speed somewhat. Basically I have a mate designing a calculator with this added. It will asking if the car has poor, average (its default like above) or excellent aerodynamics and caclulate it accordingly. Its a simple idea but should be effective, eg...adding say 4mph to the fiat coupe term speed it comes up with:

220 1307 171 6.62 16.00 9.39 15.00 @ 97.29

increasing bhp to 240bhp gives
Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo 00 240 1307 187 6.20 14.58 8.38 14.56 @ 100.43

which is closer. Contrary to what people say, it obviously puts it power down well for a fwd car to hit 60 near 6secs!

Hi nisr227, just for your comparason my AP22 (peformance meter) times are usually around 0-60 7.1secs 0-100 17secs. The Williams gearing makes it nigh on impossible to get under 7 secs to 60. You need to hit 3rd to get to 60

My peak power and torque seem to be in different revs than when new so that may bu66er up any comparason. My car is still standard tho.

"Contrary to what people say, it obviously puts it power down well for a fwd car to hit 60 near 6secs!"

the car limits boost in 1st and 2nd gear, also has a viscous coupling, to make both wheels spin at the same time, so on dry road works quite well, in wet roads just good fun!

those last stats sound about spot on!

Yeah, Clio Williams are pretty quick (I know someone who has a 180bhp tuned one on many trackdays) but i've tested one of acceleration meters on my Pulsar and thought the figures were too quick for my spec, and compared to what I acheived at the pod and airfields on many occasions. Great fun though, especially comparing friends cars and when you've done before and after mods.

The 1/4miles figures are the more accurate becuase you will always have gearing etc to contend with that effect the 60 figures.

Dave, what I can also do is amend your figures so it is correct for your car with 220bhp, and then add various bhp to show the effect...all provinding you can get the power down...

(ignore the 0-60 times, but the 0-100 and 1/4miles should be OK)

Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo 00 220 1307 171 6.12 14.58 8.46 14.50 @ 100.21

We have a single seater hillclimb car made from carbon fibre rear wheel drive 242BHP at rear wheels on the rolling road weight of 262Kg what figures will this achieve?

Thanks for that mate, looks good!

i did see a coupe 20vt, with 350bhp, with racelogic traction system, with a recorded 0-60 of 4.3 secs,

i think any car that can do 0-100 in 10 secs is going to feel very, very fast.

its quite easy to get coop to 270/280, chip, exhaust, air filter.

I know Dave, i've spent alot of time reading the Coupe Forum, I'm seriously thinking of getting one (the plus version) as my next car becuase the Pulsar just costs too much to run and the Coupe has good mpg when taking it easy. Its just the fact of the handling but I know you can improve that.

the 350bhp Coupe comes up as..

Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo 00 350 1307 272 4.40 9.35 4.95 12.65 @ 116.90

Its shows you what a single seater body and super soft slick tyres make in reality it has been timed at 1.9s to 60.
We dont have a powerfigure at the flywheel as it is a 1600cc hayabusa engine we will have a dyno figure in approx two weeks as SBD are fitting a new ECU to the car again this will still be the power after it has gone through the gearbox.

Fast car then andy. I've set the formula up for normal road tyres, as mentioned on the first post, it allows for increased wheel spin, even on rwd with that sort of bhp per ton.

BUT if I amend the 60 by 1.5sec to allow for better grip with slicks to 1.9 secs, then all the other come in line as.......

Single Seater 242 262 938 1.91 5.87 3.96 10.27 @ 132.92

Bike peformance!

Well it is only 40kgs heavier than the bike and it goes round corners like nothing else on this earth. Did you see any of the coverage off Goodwood on TV the car that got the fastest time including all the F1 cars was Grahame Wrights hillclimb single seater, with a german touring car 2.5ltr V6 engine in.

Power per weight, simple as that. No I missed the Goodwood program!

You could always fit a turbo conversion like they do to the bike versions, should have more of an effect becuase it would pull a wheelie when the turbo kicked in all the time. Wouldn't be very drivable though.

Pity it can't enter TOTB2.

Good choice of cars sir.

Here's the info:

Peugeot 306 Rallye 2.0 99 167 1163 146 7.51 21.44 13.93 15.94 @ 86.67
I still don't agree though...

AP22 said 0-60 in 6.64secs

York dragway said 1/4 mile in 15.2secs @ 91mph in standard road trim and 14.7secs @ 93mph with it stripped out (not fully), with a standard car apart from a panel filter.

Similar times for my mates Rallye to, so mine aint just an odd one!

Theory aint always right.

Rich, fair enough, but those times are so quick for a Rallye. York strip is obviously very quick, must see if I can beat my best Pulsars's 12.76sec (Santapod) there some time. I still don't see where, theory, or no theory, the Rallye gets its speed from over a 6, unless the the BHP is more or the weight even less than you said. Most of the hot hatches, 6 speed or not, are not that far out compared to the theory figures, so what makes the Rallye so quick? Maybe they produce more when "well run in"?

Might starting running my 6 up some strips too. I'll recheck the figures using the rwd formula, to see what it comes up with, this allows for less wheel spin than fwd, it will reduce the time somewhat.

Have you had your car on a rolling road, I would be interested to see whats its doing BHP wise? I've heard that the GTi-6 engines in fact push closer to 155 (what they quote for the S16) instead of the quoted 167, which confuses me even more.

Anway, Re the other requests, I'm at work at the moment so i'll have a look when I get home tonight.

Quick Reply: Theory 1/4mile figures now with 0-100
