I currently run a gawd awful Punto 55SX - I think I must have been bad in my previous life?

Girlfriend has a 1.4 P reg Civic which has a s/steel exhaust and decat pipe. great little car to drive. So I started thinking of getting one, but the older shape 91-94 era car.

I want to rid myself of the italian connection and wondered if any of you folks have owned one i.e. are they any good/reliable, insurance, parts costs blah blah. it'll replaced the punto as my impreza is kept garaged because my drive to work is a total waste of time for it.


Sensible suggestion appreciated about the Honda - can say anything you want about the Punto though - its crap IMO.

 

My gf's dad has one (the 1.6 non-vtec, i think that's the LSi). Hes had it a few years now and its never had any major probs. It does have a tendancy to blow brake lights however...

Its quite nippy, and the brakes are excellent. A bit too much body roll for my liking, but it is nice and low with a nice low seating position.

Don't even think about it if you want a car with a useable boot though

and they dont have centre consoles either ,...so the interior looks a bit crap........

 

My sis has a K reg 1.6 VTi which I used to own. It's done about 80k now and the engine has never missed a beat. Never had any probs with anything electric on it. Only replacements have been tyres, pads and discs. Fun little motor, 0-60 in the low 7's meant it was always King of the hot hatches in it's day.
She still loves it (as did I) and plans to keep it for ages yet - no reason to get rid of it whilst it still remains so reliable. And Honda apparently have never had a Vtec engine warranty claim, so the legend says !
Only downside is the rear seat which on the Vtec is a real 2+2.

 

There are a few versions available on those 'EG' Civics - LSi, VEi, ESi & VTi. LSi has a 1.5 litre SOHC engine that produces around 90bhp, the VEi has a 1.5 litre SOHC VTEC-E engine that produces roughly the same power (the VTEC-E is for 'economy'), the ESi has a 1.6 litre SOHC VTEC engine that produces 125bhp, and finally, the VTi has the 1.6 DOHC VTEC that produces 158bhp. The VEi is only available in hatchback, & I think (tho not sure) that the ESi is mostly in saloon form.
My Uncle bought a new LSi back in 1994, the only fault is the broken facia clock (replaced under warranty). It was utterly reliable over the 70k odd miles put on the car.

I had the American styled 1.5Lsi with multi point injection, but no VTEC. Its a nice looking coupe', and did everything reasonably well, and I had no problems with it at all, so very reliable.

As mentioned, interior is dated, but overall it looks good, and the 1.5 does a reasonable job of hauling it about.

 

I had a UK 94/95 Civic LSI (last of that shape before it changed slightly) before I got my CTR. Like someone mentioned above it has a 1.5 16 valve injection engine. Its also a light car so it can be quite nippy. I had it fot 3 years and not 1 single problem with it. Its still in the family now, as my mum bought it off me when i got my CTR. As for the interior, i brightened it up by adding the gear **** from the Jordan Civic, and Civic mats etc. They still loook good to this day, so yes, i would recommend one for the price

I had a 3-Dr VTi (K299 DWC - Its odd how you remember old plates) sold it 4 years ago with over 90K on the clock. Only thing I ever had to changes was 1 ABS sensor. I loved the Vtec engine and the shape.

Rear seats in the VTi were Ok - it was the boot that was laughable I did like the split tailgate though.

Still look good today. Way better than both the shape that replaced it and the current one.

My cousins mum has a '95 M-reg civic (1.5 VEI) and has done 84K miles.

Only problems it has had is replacing the cam belt at 60,000miles, which wasn't cheap! (as with most japanese car parts) and also finding it sometimes difficult to shift into reverse gear. But apart from that it has been running reliably.

if you u do consider buying one 91-95 models, then I would look check reverse gear when test driving.

If its an import check if its got the underseal that protects it from this countrys' s*** whether.

 

I, err...blew one up !

The oil pump sheared off (car was a LSi, out of warrenty with 65K on it) and Honda replaced the whole engine FOC so that they could investigate the failure !!!!!

what?!! How in the hell did that happen. Did it literally blew up? whilst driving along.

I only thought metros would do things like that?

 

Not literally.....The oil pressure light came on and it starting making some strange noises.....

I got the car recovered to a Honda dealership and it turned out to be the oil pump had sheared off. Honda replaced the engine FOC so that they could look at the engine to find out why it had sheared.
