E46 M3 Vs R34 Skyline with 2k mod limit

or you could buy a 10 year old corsa and spend all the extra on really big spoilers, even bigger wheels and absolutely unbelievably big speakers and amps.
any money left over could be spent on plastic surgery to give your girlfriend really unbelievably big breasts and to buy an absolutly unbelievable hugely big tube of clearasil for all the acne that seems to go with being the owner of a modified corsa :P

If I remember correctly the revised M3 engine hold the record for power-per-litre in the production car class. 343 horses For this reason its pretty highly tuned from the factory. Accordingly its unlikely that much extra power could be had from it.

Or with a little bit more you could pay for the lightweight M3 (sorry can't remember its name) and BMW will do the weight saving for you I'd have an M3 too

Don't get me wrong. E46 M3 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Against a Skyline, particularly an R34 theres no contest! The nissan just does it for me, standard or otherwise. Very rare too, compared to a BM anyway!

The M3 CSL is the lightwieght M3, due for release next year but it comes with a very hefty price tag and rumours are it could be a left hooker only - gutted, like the Z8, great car but LHD.
As has been said, you wont get a great deal more from the M3 without spending alot more than 2k, your talking supercharges and suchlike, the Skylines tuning poitential is massive.
As has also been said a million times, the cars are not really comparable for this reason, and that the M3 was built for a 4 seater mile muncher, the Skyline was built to go very ******* fast indeed!.
M3 anyday of the week for me, love the skyline but its a bit strong for my taste and its bad enough leaving the M3 anywhere with the attentoin they get but the Skyline would draw unwanted attention me thinks, more so than the BM. What would you rather be in a one on one chase with the coppers in?

Well I'd go skyline
Never had any 'unwanted' attention in mine usually get cheered at and the likes, the scooby got more negative impreza than the GTR...
The M3 weighs as much as a GTR. Goes well and looks very nice, if a bit common Lightweight one would be very nice, but no skyline... I've not driven an E46 and I understand they handle and go exceptionally well with an excellent engine. Blowdog may be best to advise here - he was planning to buy an E46 but ended up with an R34 GTR!

Why oh why would you want to modify an M3?
M3 CSL will cost 50k and LHD only.
Drove M3 [manual] but cancelled order after driving Blowdogs R34.
Why not consider an M5 ... 400bhp 0-60 5.3secs.

Love these debates. Mature and factual, just the way they should be.
I had a deposit on an M3 a year ago after having had the car for the weekend. I did a lot of miles in it that weekend and came away thinking it was the most complete car I'd ever driven. It's quality was unparalleled for the price and with style and performance to boot.
But I saw Glens (Tokyo's) R34 at Trax2001 and thought that was the car I wanted. The thing that swayed me were the following things:
1) Price - M3 was over £10,000 more expensive. I have now spent twice that on my Skyline to get it to the 430 BHP I have now.
2) Individuality - Seen how many M3's on the road now?
3) Waiting list - 2 years for an M3 back then.
Still, given the choice now, I'd do R34 again any time.

are u saying u spent 20k on the skyline to get it to 430bhp? i know u mean something else, i'm confused, how much did it cost to get to 430?
also, have u taken it on a track? if so, how does it compare with an M3?
cheers.

havent driven any skyline but im sure its a damm sight more rewarding/involving that the M3...
teh m3 that i drove was a lifeless barge... teh steering was appalling... but still an amazing bit of kit providing you approach it for what it is and dont expect "a road going racer" like all the salesmen kept telling me (lol)

ashkay,
Sorry, that wasn't very clear of me.
To get about 430 BHP (maximum before going bigtime) then you need to spend at least 3-5k, depending on how you've gone about it.
I've done considerably more with my money since then. Don't let anyone fool you. The Skyline is an incredible piece of kit and can be tuned to absurd extremes (one in Australia is currently exceeding the 1300bhp mark) but it's bloody expensive to do so! Everything, for some reason, costs £1000.00 on a Skyline.

Personally speaking, I found the M3 a very rewarding drive.
I was looking at something I had no intention of spending any money on once purchased.
I hasten to add I was going to buy a convertible. I wanted a nice car that was a good pose and the M3 fulfilled all my requirements.
I still have difficulty comparing M3 to Skyline as I really think they are totally different cars not necessarily aimed at the same target audience.
What I do know is, its easier to drive a Skyline slowly than an M3.
I'll reserve opinion on the M5 till I test drive one.

I have driven the a modded R34 (400bhp)back to back with My M3 cab at Bruntingthorpe proving ground. See the thread bruntingthorpe M3 r33 R34 and mitsi 3000gt.
It cost more than 10k to mod the R34 up. The R34 was great and I am sure in the wet a Std Skyline might whip an M3 coupe, but in the dry I don't thing there would be much in it. We had the M3 cab cornering almost as quickly through nearly all the corners (with different drivers in the R34 and the M3).They are both great to drive but, the M3's got more feel through the steering, slightly better throttle reponse, the R34 felt very secure on the track, very stiff, again with the M3 it is easier to change the attitude of the car mid corner purely using the throttle.
The R34's got lots of groovy gizmos in the cabin, but i like the BMW interior better. There is a lot less potentail to modify the M3, whereas people have 1000hp skylines
The R34's £52k new after you modd it up £10k, you could have bought an M3 coupe £38 with lots of extras and a nice Caterham or second hand Scoob for the track
Having said that the differences weren't great. it looked the boby's ***, modified was quicker off the mark and was an excellent car

Hadly a fair comparison! And why specify a 2k budget to mod it, that can only benefit the Skyline?!
M3 v.highly tuned normally aspirated bordering on race engine, RWD, limited electronic gizmos. 40k
CSL 250bhp/ton est. 50k
R34 v.detuned turbo charged engine, 4WD and lots of electronic gizmos to hide the fact it handles like a barge. 180bhp/ton.55k
In standard form M3 has it hands down.
