The 306 XSi 8 valve is a very slow car... 0-60 in about 10-11 secs? seen one at crail running 17 secs :-) hehe The later 16 valve version will be leagues better.

Yeah a modded one but a standard one struggles to beat 10 secs. Even if your XSi had 150 hp? (your rough guess?) it couldnt do 0-60 in 7.5 secs!. My Primera SRi (a far superior car to a XSi IMHO, maybe get one of them?) has 162 hp (RR proven if that proves anything ;-)) and can do the 1/4 in 15.8 with a 2.1 60 ft and I doubt it can do 0-60 in 7.5. If you are looking for a 5k car to run about in id say get a R/S reg GT Primera (half leather, alloys, cd autochanger 150 hp...)

Are they reliable? Also what are service costs like?

My wife has had one for a few months now and the only thing she's had done was the brakes..its not yet due for a service so I can't comment, but no doubt some of the other guys will shortly. Its a great car to drive when you wind it up (does get thirsty though) and handles really well IMO..Shes glad she bought this and not a Golf though

Too slow, dig a bit deeper and get an S16. (GTi-6 without the six speed box)

 

S16 is a very different car to the GTi-6 - engine is very different!!!!

Xsi is a good motor though Servicing is every 9k or 20k depending on age, and not too steep either!!!!!!

 

Fantastic cars. I have one for sale if you are interested. The Scooby I now own was the only car to out handle it.
The one I have for sale is a 1996 N reg with under 35k miles.
Lowered and chipped only 3 mths before I took it off the road, Alloys with low profile tyres, K+N Induction Kit and Ecosse front grill. Rolling roaded at 135bhp before the chip was put in. This will have lower mileage (equivilent to 3yrs old) and will be a lot cheaper. Also has the same bhp as the S16 version.
Car is there if you want it, but if not I'm sure you'll enjoy the XSI if you get one.
XSI's are insurance group 12. I am 22yrs old and only paid £650 fully comp. Not sure about service costs as I tend to do my own.
I only use fully synthetic oil, and had the K+N induction kit fitted which increased the power by 13bhp. Mine appeared in the Peugeot Sport Club magazine and is in mint condition.

I love my XSi to bits, even though it does tend to attract vandles. The costs are pretty average id say, just dont go to the dealers for parts

Mine has been very reliable in the two years i have owned her. Only one prob with stepper motor but the car has done 90,000

One thing I will say is get it serviced regularly - makes a world of diff

Would you consider buying my 306 gti6 in a couple of months time, as a scooby beckons.
It is T reg, 43000 miles,silver,fPsh,Tax & Mot.Price around £7500-£8000.

 

If you check out Peugeots figures, I think you'll find the phase 1 8v models have a slightly higher top speed and beter 0-60 time. The phase 1's also came with passive rear wheel steer and keypad alarm and immobilisor. Not sure if these appear on the phase 2 or not.

 

No, the Phase 1 XSi's weren't that quick and were an insurance friendly hot hatch, like so many at that time.

The Phase 2's also have the passive rear steering and the keypad immobiliser has been ditched on all Pug's in favour of a transponder in the key.

The later 16v's are a good car.

Thanks for the offer but I need a car with a lower profile than GTI-6 for the times when I need to park in dodgy areas. Also the rather large turning circle puts me off. Also I'm not looking to spend more than £5K.

Yep, chopped one in for the scooby, loved it to bits when I first got it but was glad to see the back of it when it went. Complete bag of spanners that car was. Frequent hesitation/missing when accelerating which three Peugeot garages failed to fix. Also decided to cut out completely in the fast lane of the M4 !! Luckily that was a Sunday evening so I managed to reach the hard shoulder unscathed. AA bod turns up and says it's very sick and the ECU has switched to emergency settings so tows me to garage. Two days later I ring the garage to be told it started first time so they left it assuming it was OK.

All in all a right Friday afternnon car I think. The whole experience put me off Peugeots and as far as I'm concerned I'll never own another one.

And as for that very large chain of London based Peugeot dealers!! Don't even get me started on that lot!!

My phase 1 does 0-60 in 7.5secs. Don't know if I was lucky and own a good one, but it was very quick even as standard. This has to be one of the most insurance friendly 2 litre hot hatch around (group 12). You'll do well to find a decent T reg for under £5k. Any low mileage XSI will be around £6k especially for a phase 2.

Not sure of these 306's anymore. Heard too many horror stories about them breaking down all the time. The dealers don't seem too good either.

Decided to play safe and get a Focus Zetec.
