Default New STi Engine damaged for less than 9000 miles on the clock.

Just received a call from my cousin today, somehow he managed to blown his new STi hatch engine apart for doing 40mph on the road today with rev lower than 3000 rpm.

for what I know through years of experience on subaru, they are or they used to be extremely reliable. so is this like a one of unlucky thing or is this a common faults on new STi's?

few posts in scooby general about it, seems to be relatively common, apparently a new map from the deal allegedly sorts it out. Piston no 4 seems to be the common piston to go

the funny thing is actually subaru will need to investagate the engine before they will decide whether or not they will carry out the warranty work on it. it is a completely standard less than 9 months old. at the moment he is abit worried..

but if its a common thing then should be ok?

Good news subaru agreed to fix the car under warranty, but he totally lost all confident on it. indeed he is going to selling it back to subaru and looking for a nice white Spec C atm
