Which area of Manchester are you starting from?
What time of day are you going?
Not sure what other's might say, but one route is:
A34 to Congleton.
A534 to Wrexham via Sandbach, Crewe, Nantwich etc.
Last time I drove the A534 it was pretty quiet and from memory had a variety of swooping bends and tighter corners etc.
If you want to avoid Crewe, perhaps go cross country down the A535 from Alderley Edge to Holmes Chapel, over the M6 on the A54 to Middlewich and down the A530 to Wistaston, joining the route above on the A51.
(The A534 is the one that goes past Demon Tweeks if you felt the urge to visit it on the way past!!)
That's only my opinion, I'm sure there are other people who know better roads!!

From inside the M60 on Saturday Morning.
Cross country is the preffered route as want to avoid motorways where possible.
I have Autoroute installed, but its knowing the good roads to drive thats the key

From South Manchester
A535 Alderly Edge to Holmes Chapel
A530 Middlewhich to Nantwhich & Whichurch
A525 Wrexham
Note at Whichurch, the road to Tilstock/Wem is a good one, but a little off your planned route.
