Default Quiz junkies solve this ???

A plane is standing on a runway that can move (only using some sort of conveyer belt). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer belt moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction).

Can the plane take off?

Interested to see what your thoughts maybe.

Due to a lack of moving air flowing over the wing, thus, creating no lift I'd say no.
It's the equivalent of a car creating downforce on a rolling road (except inverted), no air flow over the car, no downforce. There's a reason race cars, etc. are tested in wind tunnels, only difference with the plane is that you want the forces to be acting in the opposite direction. Now if you repeated the same exercise in a wind tunnel...

The answer is YES

As the question was "can the plane take off"

You don't even have to turn the conveyor off

The wheels on the bus go round and round

If the conveyer is moving, apply the brakes and if going forwards the plane takes off, if backwards then a big accident as it falls off said conveyer...
