A witness to the attack by al Shabaab militants on a shopping centre in Nairobi has told Sky News the gunmen killed anyone who was not Muslim.

Saadia Ahmed, a radio presenter from Nairobi, said: "We heard three explosions outside the building then all of a sudden we heard gunshots and people ducked down.

"A lot of people were shot while they were trying to escape. I saw one of the gunmen with an AK-47 and later two of them were talking and it sounded like Somali or Arabic."

Ms Ahmed said the attackers released people who were able to prove they could speak Arabic.

 

Are people only regarded as being a Muslim if they can speak Arabic?

 

No. May be in Nairobi, God knows.

Pictures on internet tell the story of horror. This terrorism needs to stop. 'How' is the question.

Unknown number of hostages (at least 36 though cannot be confirmed yet) are still being held in the Westgate centre.

According to the reports, “the gunmen are currently holed up in a supermarket”.

“Al-Shabab told the BBC it carried out the attack on the upmarket shopping centre in response to Kenyan military operations in Somalia. There are about 4,000 Kenyan troops in the south of Somalia, where they have been fighting the militants since 2011”.

It’s going to be a difficult one. Kenyan Government is working something out atm, it indicates.

 

How can you take hostages and then,no doubt martyr yourself.

 

I doubt that the Kenyan Govt have the skills or resources to mount a successful hostage rescue mission.

**** martyrs, I'm terribly concerned about the hostages. What a state to be in. Hope the 'martyrs' get caught alive then tortured, and hostages are freed alive.

 

Hm. Even the advanced governments would struggle with this one, so I'm not sure what hope the Kenyan Govt. has got. We'll just have to wait and see.

Somalia is a failed state and this is one consequence. Plus also there seems to be a strain of Islam that revels in blood letting.

I was due to fly there tonight and my hotel is around 3-400m from the Westgate, so I have just postponed my flight. Probably safer now than before ironically, but nothing will be moving. I have been there 3 times in the last 5 months and these wnakers have been threatening for a while. Israeli special forces are allegedly involved now so it's going to get messy

Horrendous situation- hope they get the others out without too much further tragedy.

 

Some of the terrorists may be women it has been reported.

 

Not surprising. One of the Indian Prime Ministers was bombed by a female suicide bomber. She belonged to the Tamil Tigers.

 

If the attack has been carried out by al-Shabab I find it surprising that women would want to be part of an organisation that oppresses women unless they are forced to do it.
