Default Defra / Hetas Wood Burning Stoves

Anyone know their Regs....?

Can you use a non defra stove in a smoke controlled area, if it is fitted by a Hetas fitter?

Or does it have to be a defra approved stove?

tx..

You can fit a non defra approved stove in a smoke controlled area but you will only be able to burn smokeless fuel not logs. To burn logs you'll need a defra approved one.

You do not need a Hetas installer to install the stove.

There are building regulations under section J tha give guidlines about fitting a stove but they are guidelines only. Have search on google.

Also, check with your home insurance company as to wether you will be insured if you fit it. Some companies like a certificate which, if you fit it yourself, you can get from the council after a site visit.

We just paid a Hetas guy to install ours. Think it was about £350. This way I know it's installed correctly.

Oh, you have to have a carbon monoxide alarm by law too.

Hope that helps!

We have a multifuel stove that isn't approved for smoke controlled areas but we live in one. Provided we only burn approved smokeless fuel on it (e.g. coalite) then it's not a problem.

And of course we only ever use smokeless fuel on it honest

It was installed by a HETAS installer, we got a certificate and there is a metal plaque that says so. Carbon monoxide alarm also.
